bar close to body on deadlift

I recently have started to pull sumo. How close should I start with the bar to my shins? I have been told to have as "daylight" from the bar to my body and this has helped a lot. Deadlift is my weakest lift at 425 (as of today) and Im looking for any ways to increase it.

Keeping the bar close maximizes leverage and reduces back strain.

I believe the "daylight" refers to lifters that are huge. Big legs, big waist, etc. It's virtually impossible for them to keep the bar against the shins.

Are your knees infront or behind your feet when deadlifting?

keep your chest up and make sure you keep you shoulders behind the bar, this is key and usually you want a little space in between your shins and the bar.. not much at all though just a little
