    help

    Does it help to just hold heavy weight in the air? Cause some people i workout with do it and i cant bench what they can but can hold more wight.

    Depends what you mean. Its always good to get a feel for big poundages. Does it build strength? No, b/c the weight is all supported by your bones at lockout. It may lead to more strength thru mental pathways tho (like confidence).

    Ok thanks guys. That kindda what I thought but my pal said it was good for us. I told him I thought it would be more helpful to do negitives right..CD

    Anything would be better than a static hold. I like negatives, just be warm prior to doing them as we never ever want to hear "pop" or "tear".

    Actually, what they might be doing is holding the weight with elbows not quite locked. This is a bench technique I have used for a long time. You should use weight 15% beyond your max. What it does is intorduce these extreme poundages to the CNS and tendons. When you do this before preparing for a contest, you will often maximize you bench gains. Negatives can give a similar result but they can also be more dangerous. Negatives have other benefits though. (I call these statics "rack lifts") When you use racklifts, and attempt the poundages a few weeks before a competition like 110% (or whatever) for a single, there is a reason it won't feel quite as heavy.
