First i suggest to you to avoid hook strap, try to lift without them the most of the time, when you can use a reverse grip (power style, one hand up one down). Sec, varied your grip and texture size, when your of season use a 2 or 3 inch grip bar to do your deadlift, and when you begin your preparation for a contest (habitually 12 week before), be back to a normal size grip to avoid that the smaller grip give you pain, The texture is a technic who give you a sensation of ''no'' grip on the bar, the more you squeeze the more the foam take the form of your hands without giving you the sensation of 'feeling' solid grip, that's very effective. For a foam grip you can use a lot of kind of foam, but choose one that is harder than softer, like the foam on a york barbell legs extension that you find in any wall mart, don't mix up with the rubber one.
3 tips, use more isometric movement like holding a bar for 15 to 30 sec, instead of doing reps. And use a 'conjuget methode' on the grip, varied your exercices every week, at the minimum change your holding time.
Here one of the best grip source i can give you, is arm wrestler, that's their sport to get a strong grip.

I like them and yes I have had results. I use to use straps to do deads for my initial 3 to 4 sets and now I just grip the bar. So my grip strength has increased. However, I still use straps for my heaver sets. I do not do sets of repetitions with the gripper. What I find to be most effective is to try to hold the dam thing close for set amount of time. So far I can hold the #1 gripper closed for a minute, which according to the chart is like holding 140lbs for a minute. My goal is hold it for longer and then maybe jump up to the #2 gripper, which is the equivalent of 200lbs. Right now I can even get the dam thing (#2) closed but I am working on it.
