Index finger on the rings. Its the widest legal width. The reason to work on changing your grip to as wide as possible is to shorten the travel distance of the bar. Changing your grip is difficult at first but will benefit you in the end. The perfection of technique is important, this will feel weird at first, hang on and just keep working it. Trust me it will click eventually. On a side note I keep track of all my bench PR's with all grips... wide, legal, medium, and close.

the rule is the rings on the bar have to be covered. if you use a thumb-less grip you can put your thumbs over the rings and your grip would be wider, but i dont recommend doing this. i used to do this when i lifted raw but now that i lift equiped and use a lot more weight, i wouldnt do this because if the bar slips out of your hand, you are going to get hurt bad

Is everyone talking about equipped benching? If so, I agree that index finger on the rings, for the widest grip, is best to shorten the stroke. I don't go that wide raw benching though, for what I gain in distance I lose in leverage. Not sure how everyone else was considering the question.
