    Squat technique(feet)

I play rugby league so am primarily looking for gains in speed when I train. I have a particular maximal str and power routine for squats but my main concern is that i have really poor dorsiflexion flexibility (ability to move feet upwards towards the shin) so in order to squat past 90 degrees i have to angle my feet outwards at approx 40 degrees and stand with a wide stance. I am currently working on improoving my flexibility in that area but it is a slow process and i cant afford to stop squatting until i have good flexibility.I was wondering whether this would impare my sprint mechanics or produce any undesirable results in terms of applying force to the ground when trying to break tackles etc or even just in general. Any feedback would be appreciated thanks

I'm a prop (Union...btw league is gay, j/k, but it is...j/k). I'm assuming because you're worried about sprint mechanics that you're a back. There are different types of squats. Everyone will disagree on how wide apart the feet should be, but the angle of the toes pointing outward should be 45 degrees, with the knees directly over the feet, not buckled inwards or sticking out.

I too have flexibility issues in the same area you do, my physical therapist told me that unless I'm feeling pain there while doing weighted exercises such as squats, then it's nothing to worry about. If you feel no pain, then you're fine.

As far as going deeper than 90 degrees, I would not advise it. You should go no farther than just below parallel. Some suspect that going beyond this point places too much stress on the patellar ligament and the knees.

I don't go lower than parallel, and I do extremely well while pushing in the scrum. Most props who don't bother to weight train/power lift can do nothing but move backwards as I start pushing.
