Deadlifts loaded with 25lb plates vs 45s
I do my deadlifts with 25lbs plates loaded on the bar instead of 45s. I do it so I get lower and help bring my legs into it more. The last time I did it, a trainer asked me what the hell I was doing. I told him my thinking behind it and he said that I shouldn't do it and should focus on keeping my butt high. I do mine with my back locked in, but butt low so I get a good leg workout too. Full disclosure, I go to a douchey expensive gym (Equinox) so the trainers are hardly the powerlifting experts.
Thoughts?

Its deficit deadlifts. I do them all the time and feel they are a great low back workout. Only difference with me is i use 45s and stand on a 4 inch block.

Tell the trainer to worry about clients that are paying him for his advice, I would be willing to bet that he gives a ton of horrible advice to many clients like a majority of uninformed trainers.
My form is more that of what Rippetoe preaches but there are many different ways to do it and some of the greatest deadlifters out there have form that I was always told will kill your lower back. I got looks like I had 2 heads at the gym when I was doing sumo deads for a bit. People are funny.

I agree. Tell him to get lost. On a kinda funny side note, I come from a powerlifting background, did lots of meets in my time. A few years ago I went and got certified as a P.t. the Dude in the collage who was teaching the "resistance" part of the course was always telling me how wrong I was dead-lifting. Its like these people sing from the same template and im sure its driven by the insurance industry to a degree.

It seems like PT is a designation people print off from the Internet at some gyms

Doing def DL's off a block with 45's seems much more practical then with 25's mostly due to the fact that 45's are probably more plentiful. Trap bar with the handles down will get you in the ball park....almost like using 35's.

All are decent options. I like using handle down trap bar dead a with 25's as a warm up for squats. Depth feels much easier.
