When I went to "check out", my browser complained about not being able to verify that ar-r is a trusted site, meaning (I think) that the SSL cert is broken or doesn't exist.

no it's not broken ..you r browser just dosent recognise the company cirtifyiong it because of the tax issue. all is good the site is encrypted.
