This is true, frothy urine is often a red flag towards kidney involvment, and your friends should definitely see a physician. However, please be advised that frothy urine is not always a detremental sign. There are many other causes of bubbly/frothy urine that are in no way problematic, ie sugar in the urine in a controlled diabetic, because essentially any molecule of relatively large size, will decrease the surface tension enabling bubbles to form.
The one thing that gets me wondering is that he has no lower back involvement as that is often associated with what you mentioned. So it really leaves me puzzled in that respect. Hope all goes well with him.
