Is it disrespectful to get a tattoo of a countries flag?

Well I was taught that it is disrespectful. Having spent 12 years in the military you learn about these things just like dropping the flag on the ground or having a flag patch on your butt jeans. The flag is a symbol representing a nation's people not a individual. At any rate just do not go to IRAQ or anyplace else hostile because having a flag tatooed on you may be patriotic but to some zealous fundalmentals you are a target.
