Both arms fall asleep at the same time while sleeping.

I didn't know where to put this one.

A friend of mine started working out with me two months ago. He's never worked out in his life. For the last week his arms fall asleep on him while he sleeps. He told me he sleeps on his back and they just go numb. It happens several times a night. I think he's around 35 years old.

I've never heard of anyone having this problem. Has anyone heard about something like this before?

well i've never heard of it other thn from ppl who have worked out a lot, cause there arms seem to grow a lot in size, almost cutting off the circulation in certain positions. but if he's never worked out b4, im not sure, could it have nething to do w/ not stretching well enuf? jus a guess, correct me if im wrong, but i think its supposed to help blood flow.

it could be a problem with his neck/spine. one of the symptoms of an injured neck is numbness in the arms and fingers. its a nerve thing. altho if he ONLY gets this numbness when he wakes up, and then it is fine, it likely isnt that serious

He's not on anything and it's never happened to him before. He's had no accidents or anything.

The only thing that has changed in his life is that he started lifting two months ago.

And now it's been happening for a week straight.

I guess this thread points out that we all have our own weird shit to deal with. It's good to laugh at our selves

I am no Doc, but it sounds like a pinched nerve to me. I had a herniated disc in my lower neck and it would make my right arm numb and hurt like hell at night. So much so that it Atrophied my right arm muscles and right pec. Got the disc repaired and now have to work my right side harder to get the balance back......

Was there an accident or event that caused the lower neck injury because, as far as I know, my friend is not in any pain.

Not ONE specific accident that I recall. BUT had been doing martial arts for over 20 years and we would throw each other around a bunch. I knew how to fall well, so I got used a lot to demonstrate so that could have done it over the years of jarring it like that. I didn't notice it too bad until I started squating 600# so it could have been agrivated by that much weight on my shoulders.
It just started as an ache with me. I ignored it for a while then it started getting worse and worse and that is what it was.

We were joking today that he's just huge after two months of lifting. It's much nicer to think that it's a size problem. I told him by the end of the year his arms are going to take 30 min to wake up.
