    Ruptured Disc

My 18 YO bro was deadlifting to set the school record at my old highschool and set it but he said his form got out of wack and hurt his back, well after a few doctors visits and a few sessions of rehab he went back to doing his thing, well he almost didnt go out for football this year because it hurt him every now and again, but he did and played the whole season at Defensive End. Now he's into basketball season, almost done and he woke up sunday night almost in tears his back hurt so bad, So mom called the doc again and he went back in and got an MRI he has a ruptured disc in his back and its been almost a year. And he played football and basketball with it, they go talk to a surgeon on feb 1st, but they told him to finish out the season the next 2 weeks. My question is? Is it going to screw up his lifting the rest of his life?? Has anyone had it happen? And how long are you down for? Any comments would be awsome as he is wondering what to expect.

    hey man

    that really sucks

statistaclly 1/10 people that do rupture their disc, do so lifting weights. kinda suprising. the rest are doing simple things like bending over. opening a door.

i ruptured and herniated mine as a sophmore in highschool. I did mine on a dead lift. form got a little out of whack, i wasnt experienced at all, and pop. hurt like a bitch. i could barely walk and couldnt sleep.

my nuerologist told me not to get surgery unless it progresively got worse. which it didnt. but again mine had fluid pinching my sciatic nerve. so that was the problem with me. back AND leg pain. but i had a degenerative disc disease with arthritis in my back so that may be why i injured myselp. it may also be the reason i still feel pain. but i lift and i lift heavy.

you learn to perfect your form. wear a belt when you go heavy. listen to your body and if it hurts, adjust so it doesnt or you stop. I think it will always give him trouble for sure. but doesnt mean you cant lift.

its hard to say though, i dont know if he hurt him self strictly because he had bad form, or because he had some sort of ancillary complication. If thats the case he is more likely to have back trouble.

but good luck hope he recovers. as for pain in the back...a pillow under the feet does wonders. so does some high dose motrin.
