On the 30th April 2005, James Toney challenged John Ruiz for the latter’s WBA world heavyweight title, winning by unanimous decision over twelve rounds. In the post-fight urine test, Toney tested positive for nandrolone, a banned substance commonly used by bodybuilders to increase mass. As a result, the New York State Athletics Commission banned Toney from fighting in New York for ninety days, fined him ten thousand dollars and changed the result of the fight to a ‘no-contest’. The WBA responded to the positive test by stripping Toney of their title, handing it back to Ruiz and banned Toney from fighting for any WBA title for two years.

On the 24th May 2007, at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California, the same James Toney won a split decision over Danny Batchelder in a non-title heavyweight bout. In the post-fight tests, both Toney and Batchelder tested positive for banned substances – Toney for Boldenone and Stanozolol, Batchelder for Stanozolol and Oxandolone. Boldenone is a banned substance used in bodybuilding while Stanozolol is the same substance that Ben Johnson tested positive for in the 1988 Summer Olympics. Both Toney and Batchelder were fined $2500 and suspended from fighting in California for the rest of the year.
