Thread: bench question

    bench question

I've been in the gym for about 6 months routinely. A lifer a run into there told me all you have to do on flat bench is have your arms go down to a 90 degree angle and there is no need to go down further. I don't really see that since you can get a deeper lift going slowly all the way down to your chest. Does anyone have an answer or is this debated?

when i go 90 degrees the bar is on my chest so not sure about your question... as far as extending furhter with dumbell motions, its really IMO working around your limiations. If you can obviously get more range of motion without pain i would do it. Some people injure themselves this way by extending too far with too heavy weight.

Eatrainrest said it all . Many people don't like the barbell . Dumb bells probably allow for a more natural motion . I think if you feel well doing whatever routine . You can grow in doing it .

Roger that, thanks. What I meant was when your arms are level with your body and your forearms complete the 90 degree angle. I'm sitting here trying it like a dumbass in my chair to replicate the lift and yeah it's far from my chest but like I said 6 months in the gym routinely for me at 195lbs so I don't the huge chest yet but I'm working on it.

fuk the bench press. most overated exercise ever. Ive met countless people who can bench press 300+ but cant even do 100 pound dumbells.

I enjoy bench press and dumbell press.
For bench, go down until the bar just touches your chest. (dont bounce off your chest)

Never train in the bench or overhead press past 90 degree.. follow this rule in all lifts and you will be injury free, otherwise you take the weight onto the ligaments and tendons and thus to the skeletal system, you want to strengthen them as well, but over time.. like as in a long time..

barbell bench press is a great exercise especially for the young bodybuilder.. it is a compound exercise and will use a conjunction of muscles with relative ease.... definately recommended as one of the best exercises

Unless your a powerlifter the weight doesn't matter as much as the movement does. Bench is a very important movement for muscle development.

Going lower than 90 degrees on the bench press will put more stress on your shoulders than your chest. To really try to hit the chest more dont lock out your elbows at the top either.

I don't think going past 90 is a bad thing unless you drop the weight fast and bounce it off your chest or what ever... If you go slow and controlled till the bar hovers above your chest and control your press upward you shouldn't have a problem with injury and you will train your chest muscle in it's full range of motion... then it won't be long and you won't be able to go past 90 either... haha

Oh and not going past 90 on DB inclines or overheads is retarded... I can't stand watching people sling up weight and have their spotter basically lift their DB's up for them so they can work in 3/4 of their range of motion... If you can't lift the weight up yourself then drop the weight... no place in the gym for eggheads

Bump Slow and controlled imo is the best way to go for bb bench press as well as db press I laugh when I see people going fast and bouncing the bar off there chest
