Thread: insulin sensitivity ?

  1. #1

    insulin sensitivity ?

this may be somewhat of a stupid question, but here it is:

When injesting carbohydrates you insulin spikes.. if you take supplements such as chromium, vanadyl sulfate and magnisium along with the sugar this boosts your insulin's sensitivity.

What does this mean exactly? To boost its sensitivity.. does that mean you will have a larger insulin spike? Isn't this bad if you do not want to gain body fat?

any input on this at all would be helpful

as to in what circumstances one would want to boost insulin sensitivity and when one wouldnt want to

    thanks

insulin sensitivity refers to the receptors that insulin is acting on, if you are very insulin sensitive then it takes very little insulin to have the desired effect(think first time drug user, doesn't take much of anything to get them messed up), but if you have low insulin sensitivity or insulin resistance then your body has to produce alot more to get the same effect(like a druggie who's been using for years)

so if you boosted the sensitivity it would be like taking off 11 months from a drug user that did it for 1 year?

kind of a dumb example but just tryign to understand it better

basically it breaks down to this, the more insulin sensitive you are the less insulin your body has to produce, which is a good thing

insulin resistance is the opposite, the more insulin resistant you are the more you need to produce

ahh so one would want to become more insulin sensitive so they dont prodce as much insulin when injesting carbohydrates then?

well not only carbs but in my case it would be because of carbs.

correct(most of the time), insulin is the most anabolic hormone known to man, but too much of it can cause rapid fat gain(or death)
