To Those Knowledgeable with Computers! Help a Brother Out!!

Hey guys... first post on here, I've been a creepy little lurker for a while... and I've noticed some of the guys on here mention that they are computer teachers, techs, etc... so I thought I might be able to get a little assistance! (kinda ironic that I'm turning to a steroid forum for computer help, hahaha! but I figure us meatheads are straightforward he males and we tell it like it is) LOL

Alright, so I've got a 2008 MacBook "Core 2 Duo" 2.0 13" (Unibody)... and I am trying to get it hooked up to a LCD or HDTV. Here is a link to the specifications of my laptop, just for reference: http://www.everymac.com/systems/appl...ody-specs.html

Ok so these are my questions:

1.) What sort of adaptors would be needed for this connection??? (all the info I'm finding is about freaking mac-book pros! ) I'm thinking something like Apple DisplayPort to DVI adapter and then run an HDMI cable to the monitor???

2.) From personal experience does anyone know which monitors will be compatible with Mac's 08...?!?

3.) Can audio be ran through the HDMI cables or not so much?

THANK YOU SOOO MUCH IN ADVANCE.

    Forgot to mention:

USB Ports on my Machine: Two 480-Mbps USB 2.0 ports

***When I click on the link "PORTS" it says that the:
Video-Monitor: "Supports external display in dual display and mirroring modes. DVI, Dual-Link DVI, and VGA supported by optional Apple adapters"

^^ This confuses me more though, because I know that some monitors of HDTVs/LCDs only support VGA whereas, like 80% support the DVI hookup. It bugs me how it doesn't tell you which connection would be IDEAL, and not all the plain "optional" ones.

Can anyone decipher this for me please??? Thanks again guys...

Best to put this in the computer section.

I'm not into Macs but it would be easiest to take it to a Mac store to answer any questions.

HDMI cables DO carry audio, that's the whole idea, it's an all in one cable, best video and audio quality in one.

If you have HDMI and your monitor or TV has HDMI then it would be best and easiest to use that. 2nd choice would be VGA or S video outputs. You also have a mini display port. You have many options.

Thanks for the response. Apologizes about the wrong section. I just wanted to put it somewhere with high traffic so I could get a quick response! "don't hate the player, hate the game.. yo" hahahaha.

Unfortunately I am located somewhere that I cannot access typical malls, etc. So merely going to a mac store for assistance is impossible

Hopefully someone has done this in the past. I just don't want have to buy a VGA adaptor if I don't have to! Regarding the HDMI i know that it is compatible I'm just not sure if my 08' macbook supports the digital audio... (I think I've read that only the MacBook Pro's have this capability.)

    MAC USERS WHERE YOU AT!!!!?????????

This is actually the one you need as your mini display port will not carry audio and you need the separate audio cable to transfer the sound.

The other one posted may work but Ive tried it and didn't have any luck

Thanks. I'm pretty sure that's not an audio compatable adaptor though. I have been reading through the Mac forums, and they seem to say most people can't get it to work :S

depends on the tv your trying to hook up too the card itself has a hdmi adapter but not all hdmi tvs are able to hook computer thru it

look on the back of your tv and see if you have a dvi slot if not look for a vga slot then you need a dvi to vga cable plug it in and your ready to go

Word thanks for that bro! Much appreciated.

I was just being causious because I've read horror stories of people going and buying monitors and trying to get their Mac's compatible, only to find out they don't work! (I was a little un-sure if all monitors were compatible with Mac) but believe I know the answer now.

I'm going to wait till Woot has a monitor for mad cheap and buy it! haha.

Thanks for the help bro :P

Lots of HDMI outlets will not support dolby 5.1 or higher audio standards.

  20. #20
So apparently the 08' macbooks need to use a mac mini display port adapter.. and then run that to the HDMI cable to the monitor.

Problem solved. Thanks for your help everyone!

Now I just gotta figure out how to configure all the wireless keyboard and all that jazz to be compatible on dual-monitor mode.

lol np id look into the hdmi to vga cable seeing how most tvs have a vga port you will have to run another wire for sound since sound wont go thru the vga port

One last question while I've got you here! lol.

What type of audio wire would be ideal from connecting a computer to a monitor/TV?

    Thanks in advance
