    Bovine Colostrum (Anyone Try This?)

I was reading some medical journals yesterday from Hopkins University and came across Bovine Colostrum. Here is an exert from a website describing what it is exactly:

"Bovine colostrum is the early milk produced by cows during the first several days after the calf's birth. This "early" milk has a nutrient profile and immunological composition substantially different from "mature" milk as it helps the newborn develop in its first week of life. The purpose of colostrum is to provide the calf with antibodies and nutrition that will aid in the fortification of the immune system. Bovine colostrum contains many beneficial substances. The most important of these substances are: Immunoglobins, Lactoferin, Proline-Rich Polypeptide, Cytokines and Vitamins (57). "

Basically, the study showed that when administered while maintaining a solid weight lifting program, athletes showed a drastic increase in lean muscle mass. It did not have any effects on fat, but it did increase lean mass tremendously. Anyone know more about this?

I accidentally closed the page and my history doesn't save, so I can't find the journal again, but I will post the exert from it when I get it back

    EDIT:

Here is two studies I found that help describe it and show its effects:

"In a study conducted by the Sports Science Laboratory at the University of Delaware, which sought to determine the effects of bovine colostrum supplementation on body composition and exercise performance in active men and women, subjects were divided into two groups; one consumed a bovine colostrum supplement, and the other consumed a placebo in the form of whey protein. Each subject was required to perform heavy-resistance and aerobic training at least three times a week.

After eight weeks, although no improvement in exercise performance was noted, both groups showed an increase in body weight. However, the colostrum group showed a significantly greater increase in bone-free lean body mass than the group who consumed whey.

In a similar study conducted by researchers at the Department of Biology of Physical Activity at the University of Jyvaskyla in Finland, designed to determine the effects of colostrum on protein metabolism, it was found that colostrum increases essential amino acid concentration during recovery, reducing muscle breakdown and increasing protein synthesis."

Rumor is that Apolo Ohno had used it, but who knows. Anyway its human use been around for a while, they make a sweet cheese from it in some country.

I would not want to use it myself as I am sure there is a ton of shit that while perfect for an infant calf would likely cause problems in a human paticularly long term. Also since the recent discovery by the mainstream press there are all sorts of supposed colostrum products available however obtaining the actual milk in a viable state may be kinda tough unless you know someone breeding cows and are willing to pay a whole bunch of money since the calfs would likely be much less healthy without it.

I should have been more specific. That's my fault. They do sell it in a powder form, which is what was used during these studies. These studies were also performed by very well revered doctors and the study showed the complete opposite. No health related concerns from taking it, but a serious increase in lean body mass. I still can't find that Hopkins University study, but I will post it when I do. You can buy it online like a normal whey protein powder.

    Colostrum

Yes-Apolo Ohno uses it, go to synertekcolostrum.com and you'll see his testimonial at the bottom right.

Colostrum has been around since the motherhood began, but has been gaining popularity since the '90's. There are no known side effects and no known drug interactions. Bovine Colostrum is universal and any mammal can use it. For more information, google colostrum.com.
