Exclamation Why I have boycotted Tuna - And why I recommend you do as well!

So, if you've ever eaten Tuna in Canada and then the US, you may have noticed it just isn't as good -- even if you buy the good stuff. Turns out it wasn't just in my head, or your head either. But even if you have never had that experience, here's a damn good reason to avoid tuna if you're in the USA. Quite simply, this is pathetic and angers me that such deceit has been going on for so long and was so accepted in the USA.

I'm sure we will hear more about this, and hopefully the mainstream media picks it up.

    Here is the article:

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...l-effects.html

Fish mislabeling widespread in U.S. and 84% of 'white tuna' is a species which causes distressing gastrointestinal side effects

59 percent of fish sold as 'tuna' in restaurants and grocery stores is not actually tuna
Fish sold as 'white tuna' is usually escolar which causes prolonged, oily, anal leakage when eaten in quantities more than six ounces

The mislabeling of fish is widespread across the U.S., a shocking new study has revealed.

Ocean conservation group group Oceana analyzed the DNA of 1,215 seafood samples from 674 retail outlets in 21 states between 2010 and 2012.

Their research, which was released on Thursday, showed that 33 percent all samples were mislabeled, according to U.S. Food and Drug Administration guidelines.

One alarming discovery shows that a huge amount of fish sold as 'white tuna' is actually escolar, a fish that causes uncontrollable, oily, orange diarrhea.

The study found mislabeling in 27 of the 46 seafood types tested. It revealed that 59 percent of fish sold as tuna in U.S. restaurants and grocery stores is not actually tuna.

Only snapper, mislabeled 87 percent of the time and in reality any one of six different species, was sold fraudulently more often.

Disturbingly, 84 percent of fish samples described as 'white tuna' were actually escolar. Escolar is a type of snake mackerel that has rich, buttery flesh, but unpleasant side effects.

The diet of the escolar is rich in wax esters, a mixture of fatty acids and fatty alcohol, that just builds up in the body of the fish.

Unfortunately, when consumed by humans in bigger quantities than six ounces (and less in some cases), this fish can cause prolonged, oily, anal leakage.

According to thekitchn.com, escolar, also known as butterfish, oilfish or walu, is banned in Japan and Italy, and requires warning labels in Canada, Sweden and Denmark.

By retail outlets, seafood was mislabeled 18 percent of the time in grocery stores, 38 percent of the time in restaurants and 74 percent of the time in sushi venues.

In major cities like Chicago, Austin, New York and Washington DC, every single sushi restaurant that was tested sold mislabeled tuna.

Oceana warn that currently more than 90 percent of seafood consumed in the U.S. is imported but less than 1 percent is inspected by the government specifically for fraud.

The organization calls for a 'comprehensive and transparent traceability system that tracks fish from boat to plate' to be established at the national level.

    _________ END OF ARTICLE ______

And it turns out that we have known since at least the 70's about these issues with escolar, and many developed countries have regulated it to various degrees. But it just disgusts me that in the USA there is a strong chance that the tuna you have in your cupboard is not tuna... and the industry knows it. It basically seems to be industry to sell this inferior escolar as tuna!

Wow, thats sad. There seems to be so much of this mislabeling and fraudulent activity going on in the food industry these days. And we're just now beginning to bring it to the forefront.

In the summer i only eat what i catch. My freezer is typically jammed with Walleye (pickerel, for us Canucks), trout, salmon, splake (cross between a speckle trout and lake trout) and rainbow.

This has nothing to do with the fact that the product is bad for you... the thing here is that the product is being entirely misrepresented!

And this investigation revealed that it's not a small margin... it's blatant. It's not a flip of the coin here even... it's vastly in favor of not being tuna even though you believe it is. It's just not even close... 5-10% escolar I could live with. I wouldn't even post it here. But this is mind-boggling deceit.

man, I had some grilled Mahi Mahi yesterday, and I'm craving more!! Well, I know that was the real deal, but I get what the post is saying. Guess they're having some issues in the UK as well with horse meat showing up in beef labeled products.

I'm not surprised about the Tuna. Most of our store bought vegetables are mostly void of nutrients now days.

Not to go OT, I think it's related closely. Did you know:

Tests Show Most Store Honey Isn’t Honey

More than three-fourths of the honey sold in U.S. grocery stores isn’t exactly what the bees produce, according to testing done exclusively for Food Safety News.
The results show that the pollen frequently has been filtered out of products labeled “honey.”
The removal of these microscopic particles from deep within a flower would make the nectar flunk the quality standards set by most of the world’s food safety agencies.
The food safety divisions of the World Health Organization, the European Commission and dozens of others also have ruled that without pollen there is no way to determine whether the honey came from legitimate and safe sources.

In the U.S., the Food and Drug Administration says that any product that’s been ultra-filtered and no longer contains pollen isn’t honey. However, the FDA isn’t checking honey sold here to see if it contains pollen. Ultra filtering is a high-tech procedure where honey is heated, sometimes watered down and then forced at high pressure through extremely small filters to remove pollen, which is the only foolproof sign identifying the source of the honey. It is a spin-off of a technique refined by the Chinese, who have illegally dumped tons of their honey – some containing illegal antibiotics – on the U.S. market for years

I feel sorry for people that have to get the fish they eat from a grocery store. If you catch it yourself or at least a fresh fish market it is so much better. The story reminds me of the stuff they call imatation crab that is molded and colored to look like king crab meat. I think its made from fish.

Problem is not everyone has time to fish or is near a fresh fish, meat, fruit market. Actually the real problem is all the FAKE processed foods out there void of any nutrients. There is no reason for it except to hurt people.

Its a disgrace how money has corrupted the US and their federal agencies. You would think we would be better protected than just about anywhere given our resources and technology but its all about the dollar. Is disgusting. We havent come far from the days of sawdust filled bread being sold in all reality.

I posted this link in another thread however I believe it warrants 30 minutes of your time to sit and read. Understand what has been going on in our government for over 60 years.. Started back in the '50's and continues to get worse..

Coastal living has its benefits fresh fish right off the boat.
Our American food supply is a joke. Box, cannned, frozen,
    Microwaved crap.
This is not surprising. It's all about profit.
Just like aspartame the sweetener is banned in other countries, Diet Coke kills
There is a documentary "Sweet Misery" explains it all
