    Strong Bench

If someone wanted to bench a lot of weight, what would be better, a narrow grip or a wide grip?

neither...just normal grip. wide grip puts the weight on the outside of the chest and narrow will put a lot on your tris...just normal grip, lift the weight with as much as your chest as possible, not just the outside or inside. normal grip hits the center of your chest where most people are strongest.

Most people are triceps strong or chest strong. You probably already know which you are. Try your grip with a moderate weight first a little closer than shoulder width/ slightly farther out than shoulder width. See where you like to bench and blast it!! gl

Many people go too wide and minimize the assistance of the triceps. A medium grip (where the thumb tips are touching the smooth part of the bar and the hand is on knurling (spelling)) is usually the superior choice. This is just a general grip width recommmendation. The grip is really more dependent on bone and muscle struture than anything else.

agreed with all of the above...however i will also add that if you have longer arms a wider grip is advantageous cuz you dont have to throw the weight as far...

that is so true, alot of people go either too wide, or to close together.

i use to bench a certain way, with a wider grip and i moved my grip about 3 inches on the bar inward, and added like 40lbs to the bench in a week!

Mr. Olympia 2005 (coming up this weekend on pay-per-view) say that they will have men competing for benching over 1000 lbs.
