    Calf Building Question

Are there any mass building exercises that target the gastroc. muscle more than the soleus muscle? my soleus is big enough and i was wondering if there are any specific exercises that help with gastroc. development. i heard seated calf raises do it, but i don't have access to seated calf raises at my facility. any thoughts, opinions, and experiences are more than welcome. thanks all.

i personally hate seated calf raise, i train calves on the smith machine or on the leg press.. i feel it gets them a harder workout that way

Here are some exercises that hit the gastrocnemius particularly hard; standing calf machine raises, donkey calf raises, one-leg dumbbell toe raises (see pic), and hack squat machine toe raises, all of which hit harder on the gastrocnemius then seated calf raises.

    thanks for the info guys...

Howling, thanks for the pic, and the list of exercises. i will start using the one legged DB raises my next calf day. i will continue to use the leg press machine just because i can load up some serious weight on it. we don't have a hack machine or standing calf raise machine, and the Nat. but i think with cardio a few days a week and the one leggers and the leg press, i will be able to hit them pretty hard. just curious any other opions guys. if not thanks... nOva

I believe the key to building any part of the calf is to keep blood in it as much as possible...calfs have very poor circulation therefore I will WORK them about once a week and USE them almost everytime Im in the gym with some sort of calf raise...not tearing them down...just keeping blood in them...not EXACTLY what you were asking but its just that Im not sure targeting a different part of the calf should be the goal...JMO

Agreed. Calf raises with leg straight = gastrocnemius. Calf raises with knee bent = soleus. Nova, don't forget to post questions on our other site.

Toe press/calf raises with a bend in your legs, this takes the stress of your gastroc and achilles and moves the load to your soleus

I've been doing a calf matrix every other few weeks to blast them. It goes like this load up the standing calf raise with what ever weigth you are so lets say for me 190 then do 10 reps and take 10 seconds rest then hop back then 15 reps rest 10 secs then 20 rest 15 rest 10 then done. It really kills my calves becuas the constant work their going through give it a try

Donkey and calf press do wonders for me.......even had my calves almost bigger than quads at the very beggining
