40 seconds isn't HIIT. 15 seconds should be the max you should be able to do before you need to reduce the pace.

10-15 seconds at full pelt then 45 sects recovery. Do this 10-15 times.

I couldn't do this on a stair, aster only a bike or cross trainer or running if it was outside.

Mmm. I disagree... but not by much. IMO with athletes I work with, I use the track as my measure. It's about the only way you can get a person going full tilt in a safe environment. Unsafe on most treadmills. But starting at full tilt and going to perceived max on a track most moderately trained people wont wipe out until about second 20-25... Well trained guys in running intensive sports will hit 30-35 seconds before absolute failure hits. I've come across nobody that can hit a perceived max in only 15 seconds. Presumably an obese or totally untrained person would max out in 15 at most any HI work.

But to your point... people misconstrue high intensity intervals all the time. I see classes taught with 1-4 minute, "high intensity," intervals which is total garbage. Or worse yet I'll prescribe HIIT for a guy and a week later he'll proudly report that he did 45 minutes of HIIT the day prior... I'm like HI what? HI ass grabbing? You didn't run hard enough.

I think HIIT is based on the ATP system, which is the system predominantly used in maximal training, which only lasts for 10-15 seconds, after that intensity slowly lowers.

OP, HIIT should last 10-20 minutes, 10 if you're really putting the effort in.
