When you are on the basketball court in high level games it is a different world with different rules of being “civil”; the ref knows that. Now these kids are in traveling teams as one was from another state (and the elite name of one team), the ref knew that. Some are on a traveling team as 8th graders so to get added exposure to high schools with better basketball programs (some private, some public schools, it just depends). Why, because those schools give them more exposure to colleges and scholarships during the next 4 years, including the NBA, which potentially some of these kids are thinking about. The ref knew that too. There’s money and sponsorships involved in these leagues as this is a business; the ref knew that too. Here’s a few chilling words the ref could have used: “hey you dumb mf’r, do you want to play high school ball in the future, step your . . . . . ass back”. Right then and there you’ve got a few kids hesitating. As it is, because he allowed it to escalate to the point it did, some of those kids just might have committed suicide regarding their transition into a choice high school basketball program, that’s the reality. Yup, shitty high school, less chance for college or a brighter future, current reality says that it’s back to the streets for you kid.
None of this shit is rocket science and no crystal balls are needed. It’s a unique situation in a unique setting in which the ref should have been aware of, which is why I said in one of my original posts, he should not be allowed to work with kids again.
Nobody has addressed the fact that I mentioned guns might have appeared if the ref drew serious blood or did serious damage. BTW, he should have known that too. JFC, how many kids were throwing haymakers and kicking him? And he only needed stitches and could immediately get up. Those kids were squirrelly twigs in gym shorts and sneakers, a single punch to them could do brain damage. Would that have been satisfactory? Heck, the law says so, so I guess, it’s alright then. Hey little bro, yup you bloodied my lip, but I just fucked up your brain & the rest of your life, but I bet you learned your lesson didn’t you?
I’ll stand by my opinion that his best option was not to throw punches in this exact situation. Peace guys, my last 20 years had me dealing with teens, some just like this and I see it totally differently. Like I said before, I’m proud to have retired 0-0 and definitely do not feel I’ve contributed to the downfall of civil, law-abiding young men.
