my votes are Ladainian Tomlinson and Fred Taylor
my votes are Ladainian Tomlinson and Fred Taylor
Current - Shaun Alexander (I'm in AL so I gotta take him)
Ever - Barry Sanders (if he ever played behind a mid 90's Dallas or Pittsburgh O-Line he would have 25k yards and still be playing.)

hands down peyton. he was the most relentless running back ever. he was a machine and refused to fall down. as far as being relentless, i think brown may have been close, but peyton dd it verse better players.
what i like about peyton was that he was very seldom the hittee but rather the hitter. linebackers had to fill the whole twice to stop him. not many backs ran with such fury.
For Today's game, I like Jamal Lewis
From the past: Its Walter Payton
He could be so much better if he gave up the thug/gangsta lifestyle.Originally Posted by Mighty Joe
Emmit Smith simply because, well, he IS the best and his records prove it.
Currently the best, well, too many to mention that all excel in many areas.

Remember that line he ran behind in the mid 90's. They were able to blow anybody off the line and gave Emmitt holes 5 & 6 yards wide. I hated them, but that team was bada$$.Originally Posted by SwoleCat

I will have to disagree with this one, Barry baby!Originally Posted by SwoleCat
Ladainian Tomlinson is the best playing
Walter Payton best ever
kevin jones will be great imo....also i gotta say willie parker will be amazing in a few years...gotta love them black and gold boys
i think that priest holmes is one of the more talented backs, playing half the season he was the number 2 or three scoring fantasy RB. But he plays behind a line that made derrick blaylock look like barry sanders.
It's gotta be tomlinson as far as guys playing right now. His line is really run of the mill, middle of the road and he scortches everybody.
Get outta here with that Emmit crap Swole.... BARRY SANDERS. Now, I will give Emmit his due. He is a tough SOB for playing all those years...but I really don't think he compares. I live in Michigan and hate the Lions, but stilll gotta be Barry.
ricky williams would be the best current if he wasnt a screwup...
Agreed, and T.J. DuckettOriginally Posted by phatmark
I'm a Dallas fan anyhow, so I'll say Emmitt.
In addition, the record books say it too, so...........
I know the line was great, that is the point of being an offensive lineman, to be good.
Barry could have played w/that line and gotten his knee demolished and never set foot on a field again, u never know. So, going by truly WHAT IS in FACT, it's E. Smith.

Most yards gained doesn't equate to greatness. No one thinks Dan Marino is the best even though he holds NUMEROUS records. Emmitt wasn't touched until he gained 2-3 yards per rush for all those years in Dallas when other backs had to earn it. Don't get me wrong, he's top 5 or 6, but not the best. He wasn't exceptionally elusive, explosive or powerful, just DURABLE.Originally Posted by SwoleCat

L.T. right now. Past, Pure runner Jim Brown. Best all around back Walter Payton
What about O.J. Simpson???
The best slicer/dicer??
Okay, perhaps a bad analogy.

That is very bad!!!!Originally Posted by SwoleCat

Emmitt holds the record for the most yards gained. Who was the best??
Subjective question to be sure.. Best what?
One game, one back, one choice.........Jim Brown.![]()

Seriously though, being in Detroit, the Lions are absolutely a miserable organization (then and now). Barry kept me watching and I so much wanted to see him go to a franchise that would of solidified him as the best ever...
But today, active, Michael Vick...he's a RB aint he?

Preist Holmes by far before he got hurt. He missed half the games and still almost lead in touchdowns 14. Last year he had 27 TD'S an 21 the year before. While recieving 70+ catches 2 years in a row when healthy.
right now LT, Holmes, and Dillion but when it is all said and done Tomlinson's career will rank up there with some of the best ever.
priest holmes hands down.
most likely to run over you: Earl Cambell
most likely to make you look stupid: Barry Sanders
present day: L.T., curtis martin, brian westbrook

good point maybe i should say he is one of the best offensive weapons in the leagueOriginally Posted by slizzut

barry made people miss. they would hand him the ball and he could pick his own hole a better line would not have made a difference. emmitt was strong and loved to run between the tackles. bottom line is they have two different running styles barry sanders ran great but emmitt was a great runner. you can talk all u want about total yards but do u want a back durin the game to have 20 carries 135 yds and 1 td or do u want 26 carries 97 yds and 3 tds. Emmitt Smith 155
Marcus Allen 123
Walter Payton 110
Jim Brown 106
John Riggins 104
Barry Sanders 99
Marshall Faulk 97
Franco Harris 91
these are all the great backs ranked by touchdowns.
I say the fridge =)
sweetness best there was and will be imho
sweetness = 1 superbowl no touchdowns
emmitt = 3 superbowls 5 touchdowns
sweetness having no superbowl td's is on Ditka. he called the fridge's number in 85 instead of letting the guy that carried that team for so many years get his.Originally Posted by edmen2
Curtis Martin. no one says him because hes not a showboat and doesnt have a gang banger look. He would have won the rushing title by about 600 yds this year if he wasnt taken out of every game this year in the 3rd quarter. (His back up ammased another 600 in Martins place in these games)
What is a gang banger look?
