    Internet censorship

    This won't be a hate/flaming thread.
I just wanted to inform you Americans that your congress will start censoring your internet...

I browse 4chan's /fit/ for some years now. They posted this on every board:

American Censorship Day: November 16, 2011
On November 16th, the "Stop Online Piracy Act" will be heard in Congress. This legislation, in addition to the Senate's "Protect IP Act," completely undermine and fundamentally change the core principles of the Web. They have the potential to radically alter or shut down sites like YouTube, Flickr, 4chan, others, and all new companies that follow.
See americancensorship.org for more and help us stop these bills from becoming law.

If by "radically alter" you mean make it harder to steal the intellectual property of others, then yeah I see that coming. And I don't care. Protecting intellectual property is not censorship.

Having said that, I am against the law. I just don't think stealing is a right...and it certainly isn't free speech.

^ it IS possible to censor the net. Especially if the government begins subsidizing the infrastructure building (ie the actual telephone poles that carry the internet). The reason they havent already (actually they have already started) is because it is still illegal. If they control the infrastructure they can control what goes through it. Not to mention they could force ISP to not display certain pages or force verisign to revoke the domain name of illicit websites. two simple ways to censor the net.

    So does afghanistan.

here's the catch, and I see it maybe coming....

....for a premium, you can buy into "uncensored" internet

....just like you have to pay, to have your telephone number unlisted!

It's done. Most of China and North Korea is censored/filtered from the rest of the world. There are always ways around it but still most people never see the truth about news and things going on, only what THEY want us to see or allow us to find out. There are things even online that disappear for the most part and cant be found again. They dont have to sensor everything from everyone, it's only the mass majority and that's enough to make everyone else unimportant and overlooked. If someone speaks out loud enough about something that is unfair or unjust then they are seen as either radicals or just crazy if it's not inline with the masses.

How much of our history has been re written over the years fit what they want us to remember? Compare the history books from 50+ years ago to the ones in school today and there are a lot of contradictions. Some may be true, a lot arent but censorship comes in many forms. Never say never. It doesn't have to be 100% censorship to be effective.

China manages to censor massive portions of the internet.

And people thought Julian Assange was a bad person..

I'm usually against hacking, but that guy exposed the leaders of the world for the lying shit heels that they are.

Guys, the truth is that if they manage to censor the internet they could block sites like these (and especially this one), sites that give info on steroids, etc.

So yeah... you should be all against internet censorship.

Ahhh, an ethical dilemma. Should we be against anything that stops us from doing what we want? Even if it is illegal? I think they should stop giving me tickets for speeding too. And where do we draw the line? Everyone wants their illegal activity to be permitted, but demand that everyone else be punished. It cannot work that way.

    Just playing devil's advocate.

China, Iran, N.Korea are just some of the main countires that sensor the internet. Syria also used censorship until Anonymous brought that down. Eygpt was also recently guilty.

Its funny, I was reading about China's Great Firewall yesterday and how they're somehow scanning encrypted connections now so TOR, VPN's, VPS's may not be a viable way of uncensoring the internet if you're in China.

Use a VPN, VPS or TOR, for the time being, that will uncensor the net where ever you are.

Truth is, censorship is already going on. Being in the UK, I dont have access to some youtube.com music video's, I cant also watch mtv.com, various sports channels onlineand USA sitcom's, unless I register my IP in the relevant country.

This site is censored in Saudi Arabia ...... that is why I sometimes appear to have an erratic viewing pattern as my bypass filter doesn't always work!

It's not about "censoring" the net. Look at this analogy. A pawn shop cannot knowingly buy and sell stolen property. They have to do due diligence in making sure the stuff they traffic in is legal. As it stands I can start a website and allow person A to upload a stolen movie and person B to download it. The Fed and Law Enfor***ent don't have the manpower or will power to actively police the internet. However movie studios, MPAA, RIAA, record labels sure as heck do. Pirated material cuts into their profits. All this bill will do is allow copyright holders to shut down website that traffic in their copyrighted material. If thats "censorship" then so is stopping someone from coming into your house and walking off with your dinner.
