Hey guys.. Think I am going to build a new system.. I have an AMP 2G XP.. It makes me want to hurt people.. The motherboard's an Asus.
I am going to get a 3G P4.. not sure what chipset.. or motherboard yet? Any suggestions? Also a graphics card, need some suggestions? I am going to pimp this system out though.. go with a clear case with neon lights lol. and a nice lcd monitor.. thanx

Try go for the special edition P4's, they got something like a 1mb cache, think there was an edition with a L3 cache too. Go Radeon in terms of graphics card. You COULD go for a FX5700 nvidia, and install FX5900 ULTRA firmware on it, this is what i have done... and... its AMAZING mate. Card performs just like a 5900ULTRA but with out the massive price tag! Oh RAM is important dont go for cheap crap, look for cruical etc. HDD wise you could get a SATA coz they are comin down in price now, and they are a ton cheaper. make sure the dvd writier u get it dual layer too - again these are cheap.

dont go with intel, i have a couple of them and wont switch from amd again
go with an amd 64, when the new xp comes out youll be seriously impressed
1 gig 400 mhz ddr ram
dual layer dvd burner, reasonably cheap now
i'd go with 2 80 gig drives, so 160 total, just because that way if one crashes your not totally ****ed, and you can load an operating system on each drive in case one f's up
i have a geforce4 128 mb, its alright for what i paid but you can get way better then that now

Oh and by the way, the 64bit version of XP is available to download, or at least was on the Microsoft website. Beta trials are on now.
The new 64bit XP is optimized for the new 64bit Intel cpus which will be released at the same time, they will both be marketed HEAVILY with each other. How do i know this? I work for MS and marketing is in the next building to me.

If you really wanna look forward to something wait for "Longhorn" to be released, we have the latest betas at work and its looking very, very good. You may have to wait till the end of 2006 to see the final version though!

The next one to be released will be XP64 but the next completely new OS will be Longhorn, yes. It probably wont be called that though, thats its "codename" for the timebeing.

Wow I dont have time to read all this.. but thanx for the info boyz.. I will just rebuild again in another 3 years! As for the AMD I am never running with that again.. I am sorry but I have never seen sooo many problems with an AMD.. is there any graphic cards for 150buck CA?

I like that codename...texas born....I have the Athlon 64 chip and its sweet, once I upgrade my memory im going to download the XP 64. Whats the absolute BEST memory to get for not to expensive...120-150 range.

Yea cool dont get me wrong, i have a few AMD's i like them, i have an AMD 2400 which is clocked to a 3200 and is stable.They are great procs, but at the moment Intel have the upper hand. The most attractive thing about AMD's is the fact that they are dirt cheap too.

Those prices are insane at the cyberpowerpc, I just paid a dude $545 and had to use old memory and my two old dvd writer and cd writer drives

Certain instructions can execute better because of the larger operand space in 64 bit instructions. Overall though, nothing really.

some things will run a hell of a lot better on a 64 bit processor, however they will need to be slightly reprogrammed

Anything involving significant scientific computation will benefit. So games, image manipulation, scientific applications, etc will run better.
Day to day browsing, spreadsheets, word processing--virtually no difference. The performance of most applications is limited by memory and I/O speed.

The main benefits of 64 bit architecture are increased address space, higher precision in floating point calculations, and (according to you) certain instructions can execute better with their operands in 64 bit registers. I'm not running massive internet servers, nor am I decoding the human genome. 64 bit computing on the desktop isn't really needed, IMO.
Furthermore, all the speed increases that you see in the benchmarks when they compare 64 bit processors to 32 bit processors are all due to natrual progressions in micro processing technology. By that I mean I feel the speedup you see in the 64 bit procs doesn't come from the fact that it is 64 bit, but rather from the fact that its simply just a more modern processor.

**** melatonin making me want to sleep. I agree with your point though. People are being misled into believing that 64 bit computing will significantly change the way they get things done on a PC. That, is patently wrong.
On the other hand, I hope it will let me "PWN m0re n00bs in a 64bit version of CS:S".

is dual processing better than 64bits for multithreading?? i use a lot of 3d softwares and its freakin long to render large 3d assembly. i havnt try dual yet im on 64 bits right now.

See what the problem would be is if the programs you use, if they are able to utilize both CPU's as most programs are not.

Of course. Dual 32 bit processor machines will do better than a single 64 bit processor machine granted the speeds of the processors are all relatively the same.
Any multithreaded program should benefit from multiple processors because the OS scheduler will put separate threads on separate processors.
That being said, you will most likely not get linear speedup by adding more processors. Why? Some threads could be doing BS work while a single thread could be doing the bulk of the work. There could be syncronization issues where threads will have to wait on each other when accessing shared resources (i.e. IO, memory, etc). Also, depending on the algorithm being implemented, threads might have to wait for other threads to finish working on a segment of data before moving on.
Parallel computing is a pretty complex topic...=)
