How long do you leave your computer on?

just wondering how long it's ok to keep my computer on?

Sometimes i have mine going for weeks at a time, is this bad?

Its better to be left on permanentl, the power supplies las much longer that way

on in the morning off in the evening.

the longer your pc is on the easier it is for someone to try and get into it.

I do not think mine has an off switch....and if it does...I do not know how to use it.

Generally speaking it is best to leave on as long as possible. Each time you reboot your PC you take the change on something not pulling up correctly + extra wear on power supply and the like. Now the problem with this is windows memory use sucks so the longer the PC is running the more memory gets used and eventually can run to low to run properly and must be rebooted.

If you leave on all the time you want to make sure it is properly ventilated so it does not overheat. I have mine running 24/7 and I do not worry about people getting in I run a Firewall in my router and zonealarm.com software firewall on the PC itself. If you keep your windows updated current and run a firewall and good anti-virus you have very little to worry about.

Now I also run Linux computers and those can run forever with no reboot. I have two right now that have been up for over 200 days with no reboot. Linux memory/swap works much better than Window.

My 2 cents on this subject..

Your are a wild man living on the edge .. It is not wrong to shut it down but not the best for it at all.

Also standard PC's come with IDE drives which if left running 24/7 they can wear out pretty fast. I use SCSI and SATA drives which cost more but are made for the heavier use. SATA's are becoming more main stream in some of the higher end PC's.. SCSI drives are still very expensive but are the best. I use a 4 SCSI in a Raid5 array (with hotswap drives) in my main system so 3 drives could fail and one would continue to function.. very slow but still run

I never shut mine down. The only thing I will do is reboot it once in a while if it running a little slow.
