I train there I get a discount. I get free at ballys too, and they have more machinery. Every time I go in the locker room there are dudes jsut chillin naked im not into that, just shower (which i never do at the gym) and put you freaking clothes on. The y where i go doesnt have alot of machines for legs and whatnot, but its like 2 minute walk from my house and I have no car.

Some Y's are bigger than others and are decent, while some are sorry ass excuses for a building.

They should be able to give you a free day or something. Just go try it out and if you don't like it then don't join.

The Ys where i live actually have the best equipment around 1), and 2) the great thing about it is there are 4 Ys within a 15 mile or so radius.... i use each facililty, when i get tired of the sceneray at one i switch to another,.... thats a great feature imo

the Y by me is nice. its almost too nice for a gym/health club if you know what i mean. its geared more for staying healthy as opposed to weight lifting. its also pretty expensive. i go to a world gym and the Y is over $100 more a year than world.

IMO, It depends upon the atmosphere, equipment, overall size, and cleanliness. Some YMCA's are gross and outdated and some are revamped.

I visited the closest one to my house and it was a complete joke as it looked like a rundown school gym. But they renovated the whole place and I hear it's completely different and improved now.

I live right down the street from a YMCA and used to train there. It was extremely cheap to get a monthly membership.

I have a membership there but I dont workout there much...mine is alright. I would go to it but its further from home and more ppl r there than my other gym..which i prefer cuz its smaller and theres never any1 there

I workout at the Y in town it's a decent gym with tons of free weights and 20 bucks a month so I couldn't pass it up.

    Sniper YMCA

I work out at the Y where the DC sniper and his "son" liked to hang out. Crazy. "Hey John Lee Mohammed, can you spot me real quick."

y would it matter, do they have like cement or plastic weights???? i was at LA fitness...but never made use of the sauna or pool or aerobics, so i took away 20 bux, and pay 15 at Finess 1 and now have an ex roy jones jr trainer instructing our boxing cardio program!!!!! it rules

the weight room @ the Y i work out at is mediocre, but the cardio equipment is very nice. They also have a HUGE outdoor pool with slides, indoor pool, gymnastics roo, martial arts classes, basketball courts, saunas, steam rooms, indoor track (none of which i use ) If you are just going to be using the weight room then I would go somewhere else, but if you are into all that other stuff it's worth the price. I only go there because we have a family membership. All 4 of us can go for only $60/month

The YMCA I go to is perfect for me. Great, friendly staff, tons of equipment and its rarely too crowded. It is a little higher fee than other gyms, but that's what keeps the crowds down. I did a free two week membership at Bally's and it was stank, nasty and PACKED until about 10 pm at night. There also was kind of a strange homosexual flavor at Bally's. Not that I'm against Gay people or anything, it just made me uncomfortable. When I went into the locker room, there were two guys play wrestling with each other butt naked! I passed on even taking a shower and just got the hell out of there. I then was BOMBARDED with sales calls from Bally salesman for months! I mean literally 8-9 calls per day and each person said they were "the manager". It's the Y for me, as far as quality, staff and clientele. The only bad part about the Y is that they are very family oriented, so they use membership fees to pay for kids camp, day care and all that stuff. Kind of annoying to me but I still enjoy the Y.

No problem with families there, but since families don't pay a dime to contribute to my single membership, I don't necessarily want to have my money pay for their kids who have all sorts of afterschool free programs coming out of the members dues. I believe in paying for what you use....no more...no less...that's it.

The Y beside my house is garbage!

You got to wait like 20 mins for 1 machine. Its very popular so it makesit over crowded and ppl are sweaty and stinky and right beside u eww + it has no air condition, t.v or music.. its a cheap gym.
