Gents,

My lazy-ass employee surfs the web all day looking at paint-ball, snowboarding, and other shit sites and then "wipes" the list of the sites he's visited. He's putting in maybe 60 minutes of work a day, if I'm lucky.

1. How can I "un-wipe" the list and find out what he's been up to today?

2. How can I prevent him from clearing out the list in the future?

Is he cleaning the list in IE only ? Did you check the temp files ?

Also if these are your computers he is working you, you can install software that can monitor every move he makes then save it to a file for you to view later. If you wanted you can even log every keystroke he makes by simply downloading a keylogger program onto that computer.

Try opening the cookies,atleast you will know what web pages he has been looking at.I have a lazy bastard that works for me too.Or you could just disconnect his internet connection.

If your going through a router, then you could block all his fav sites from there (once you learn them). Many have a way to program & config the router for all sorts of things. If you do this through the brower, he could install a different browser to get around the browser settings.
But I would probably fire his ass instead

You can get a keylogger, and it would record each key he types on the computer.

You could set up a remote desktop, and just watch him from another computer on your LAN.

You could enable a filter. (IE has the contant filter, you can block his websites in there)

Or you could just fire his ass, and hire someone better.

I gave a call to my "computer guru" and I'm gonna have him put some spyware on the computer.

I've also got something called a "Sonicwall". I think there's some software that's downloadable which will keep a list of everything that goes through.

I'm a complete dolt when it comes to the computer. What will the clever children think of next?

You should issue a little "scare" to him first just to see how he reacts. Try this from a DOS prompt. You'll need to know the name of his computer to do this. You can right click on "My Computer" on his desktop to obtain the hostname of his computer if you don't have it, or you can find it through Network Neighborhood. In order for this to work, his PC must be located on the same Workgroup or Domain that yours is located on.

Go to Start > Run > type in cmd.exe > click OK

Now you're at a DOS prompt. Then type in:

net send hostname message

Replace hostname with the name of his computer. The message portion could read whatever you want it to read. This message that you type will create a Popup message on his computer and it will freak him out! I would suggest saying something like: "Your Internet is now being monitored. Please act accordingly."

I would at the least block sites, no need to monitor his every move. Just block his Internet access.

only if the messenger service is enabled on his comp. I think the latest XP disables it by default.

At my place the DHCP server is the only internet facing comp so all computers connecting to the net have to go through it. This comp its self keeps a log of everything everyone goes on and at what time regardless if they have cleared everybit of histrory and temp files off there comp. Ask one of the admins if this is the same were you are if so then you will have all the proof you need. Ours logs everything for about a year.

Due to abuse of internet privileges by some employees, we are now forced to monitor all internet usage and monitoring software has been installed on the network.

Please be aware that as of now, improper use of the company's internet privileges will be grounds for immediate termination.

We regret that such measures have to be taken, but as is often the case, everyone is affected by the exagerations of a few.

It's kind of like putting a sign that reads "house protected by alarm" on your front lawn, wether it's true or not, it still deters some.

I would still install monitoring software though... and with such a memo, nobody can contest being fired as they have been duly warned.

I'm having my computer guru put a key-logger on the computer. Seems nice and easy, and will give me concrete evidence to put in his employee file if I need to fire him.

I'm not against employees taking personal phone calls and checking their personal e-mails every now and then; hell, I do it myself. We live in the modern world and people DO have personal lives that don't stop from nine-'til-five; but he's been abusing the privledges given by an easygoing boss (me).
