I don't drink, and I'm never in a position to where I have to justify myself as to why I chose not to drink. If I were to one day be asked, I would say,

    "I don't drink."

it gets easier as you get older. Now days my friends who drink constantly respect my descion to not drink or go out and have like 1 or 2.

I feel for you, but you've got to say no, Plus you know how easy it is to pick up chicks when you dont look like a fat slob......

    esp when they're drunk.

Not trying to make a point..I was just asking members what the best way to approach a question such as "why aren't you drinking."

maybe it's easier for some people rather then others..

i don't see how that as a question gives you any difficulty....

    say "i don't drink".

unless u belong to some weird alcoholic cult or something whats the problem?

you could either just say no or make up some reason like your best friend died because of a drunk driver so you swore not to drink = ]

It doesnt give me to much difficulty its just awkward at times...Here at SUNY Albany 95% of the students get obliverated so it is kind of like an alcoholic cult on weekends..
Regardless I posted this in the lounge just for some advice or opinions on how you guys approach this..

    Thanks for the input

I can understand where you are coming from, I'm in school as well at a BIG party school. I don't have difficultites explaining to others that I don't feel like drinking, but sometimes people can't understand why. I think it has something to do with the fact that they don't have the will power to say no and feel threatened by your discipline/will power. Or they find it too difficult to fit in without drinking. At this point, my close friends know my beliefs and lifestyle (healthy, fitness, lifting, ect) and respect my decisions.

They may give me shit from time-to-time, but nothing serious. I still drink every week or so, but nothing like I did my first few years of college. You need to surround yourself with people that have simliar beliefs, interests, hobbies as yourself if you feel the people around you now don't respect your choices. You really shouldnt need an excuse to avoid doing something you don't want to do. But if you do feel pressured, being a DD is both a good excuse and good deed.

I'm in your boat man, I turned 21 in June and live in a big party/bar college town. It helps a lot having a girlfriend. We have been together 4 years so were quite serious and live together, honestly most of my time is spent with her, I maybe go to the bars 2-3 times a month at max because I have a girlfriend and partially to my career. My girlfriend will be turning 21 in May and will be wanting to go to the bars, I plan to be cycling then so I will be going, but ordering water or diet soda vs. a beer. That way I can still go out and have fun.

I've seen alot of bigger built dudes out at the bar and always wondered how these big ass dudes can stay in great shape and drink so much at the bar?

Because isn't as horrible as some people make it sound. And it depends on you handle your alcohol. I have plenty of friends that look real good and drink

Honestly it's probably a good idea regardless you stay out of those places. Mostly everyone our age is ignorant when they drink and if you're in decent shape with a nice build they'll try to test you when they're sippin' on the "I can **** with him" juice. That just leads to a bunch of useless drama any damn way, so theres one bonus of not being involved with all that.

  32. #32
how is this even and issue?
I have a great time many places w/o alcohol, i don't see why its needed. It doesn't enhance any experience for me.

i used to get questions all the time when i was in school. i wasnt even on anything, but certain times when i was droping weight, i wouldnt want to drink. you dont have to explain yourself anymore than,"i dont want to drink" that is it. just for the facts of staying in better health and trying to drop weight is good enough if you really think you need an excuse. hell , i love to get drunk, beer is my favorite, but i drink only when i want to, not when i am pressured too.

it was a big deal at first, but after awhile people get used to it. I just say i have stuff to do tomorrow so I can't be hungover and try to get shit done. My grades have gone up significantly btw, knocking on cum laude honors here at the end of this semester. Although spring break was just this past week and I was on a cruise...that was interesting.

I work at a place where we get together after work often. They are all big drinkers like the typical american male. Saying "I don't drink" doesn't fly with them. I'd get hammered with that approach and as we all know the office life is more politics then anything else. The best excuse to not drink I have found is saying I'm on a medication for about 6 months and the doc advised me to not drink. They may ask what kind of drug and I make something up because people are too stupid to figure it out.
