Abosolutely, ask any addiction specialist or look up the treatment methods for Xanax addiction. It's the only Benzo that can't be interchaged once physically dependant.

There are very few drugs that could cause death upon withdrawal. 2 of the major ones being Benzos and Alcohol. Each can be used to ween the other, although you won't find many doctor prescribing alcohol in a drug treatment facility. One of the first aid procedures for Benzo withdrawal is alcohol when nothing else is available. This is when seizures start to happen and medical treatment isn't close by

Problem with Xanax is, once there is a strong physical addiction present, Xanax is the only thing to ween someone off Xanax without the potential for seizures. Otherwise Librium or another longer acting could take it's place
