I've had both (iphone right now). The G1 is great if you want a computer-like experience. I like the ability to customize the G1 as you see fit (tons of widgets and Home replacements are available). I broke 3 of them, and I don't have Tmobile so I was paying full price for each.

After I broke the last one and didnt have $350 to throw down on a phone, I got an Iphone as I had an ATT upgrade available and it was cheap as I signed a new contract which I was going to do anyway. The IPhone is a "cleaner" user experience, and it's smoother and prettier to use. I do not like that you can't customize it beyond moving icons around. The hardware feels better in your hand and the end user experience is "simple."

Bottom line: If you want more of a computer/desk-top like experience, I'd go for the G1. If you want something sleek and easy, with the loss of a little customization, go with the IPhone.

Other observations: The only thing that really pisses me off about the IPhone is the inability to recieve/send MMS. Granted, this is not the phone's fault, but ATT's as they have for some reason decided to block this feature. If you want to get/send a picture it has to be emailed. I think Android is a great platform, but the hardware hasn't caught up to it yet. For some reason HTC (makers of the initial Android phones) are putting the operating system on sub-par hardware causing lagging and what not. Give me IPhone hardware with Android software...that'd be ****ing awesome.
