    Home gym, yay or nay?

Apologies if this is in the wrong section and needs to be moved to somewhere like the Lounge, but just wondering if any of you guys invested in home gym equipment?

Right now, im never in one place for long enough to make proper use of a gym and it's really frustrating. I'll be at Uni, use the gym there, start getting good results and then bam, holidays come, I end up getting a summer job, which evidently is nowhere near where I study, so then I either go ages without working out or I sign up to a second gym under a temporary contract, which seems a massive waste of money in light of myself already being at another gym.

So to cut a long story short, has anyone ever built/aquired your own stuff and do you feel you can work out just as well in your own space or do you need a "gym" environment? Im also thinking that if I started getting my own equipment, at least if I had to travel I could take "some" stuff with me.

    Yay!

Nothing like waking up, being able to jump on the bike or treadmill by walking down the stairs. No driving. No traffic. No wasted time. And you have all your supplements right there.

Same thing with weights, you don't need a lot of big fancy contraptions, a bench and some dumbbells will do the trick.

I have never really worked out at a gym, if I had to go through all the trouble to get there and what not I would never go. I can workout on a whim whenever I want, no idea how folks make those trips 5 days a week. Got your own shower right after, you can eat a proper meal immediately after.

You also don't have to waste time changing weights, waiting for a machine etc. You can set it up so everything is ready to go.

I like to hear loud get pumped up music of my choice when working out, can't have that in the gym obviously.

There are soooo many reasons to just do it at home.

I've put my own "gym" together. It consists of a 4 station work out machine, a total gym 5000, and about 700 lbs of steel weight, plus a traditional bench, 4 bars, and two sets of dumb bells, and a bunch of other minor stuff.
The positives are no commute, no distractions, no fees. This keeps me more consistantly working out in the long term.
The negatives are a bunch of crap taking up a lot of room (still need to get some weight trees, btw), no spotter (hence the station), and i"m more or less working out in a vacuum, meaning there isn't anyone I can really learn from (which is why I found this place)

I think Ideally I would like to find a quality work out partner that can be on my schedule (morning). I'm not sure this ideal person actually exists locally.

Working out at home has its advantages time flexibility, no waiting in line, no sweat from other people, your own personal music

disadvantages: no partner, less variety of equipment, and no bunnies..

I have a squat rack with 1,500 pound of weight. 10's-100's dumbbell set... a pair of 120's and 140's, 160's. Incline, decline bench, 3 barbell bars, dip-chin-up-pull-up station. I have invested about 2,000 dollars but worth it in my opinion..

Some great posts guys and T Gunz, that set up is awesome! How long did it take you to get all that stuff or did you buy most of it outright?

I like your organization! My steel weights are just lying on the ground for the moment, and looks ugly. Plus mine are split between one of my living rooms and underneath my patio cover in my back yard. But I'm getting there!

A good squat rack, w/ an adjustable bench and a pull down attachment will more than get you pointed in the right direction.

I need a gym membership to be motivated. A good gym at that because I like to mix it up often with many different variations/insertion points. I think home cardio equipment is a must though.

Nice gym tgunz.... I have a home gym and have lifted at the gym.

My best advice is along the lines of whartons.... do both. Or whatever fits your needs the best is what I recommend. some people need the gym atmosphere for motivation while others like the privacy and convinience of a home gym. I have found the need for both.

Home gym- can be costly, space, and boring... but also convinient, personal, rewarding.
local gym - can be overcrowded, inconvinient, shitty....but also motivating, diverse on weight machines and even faster than the home gym. good for networking.

really depends on your needs and funding Flagg. check out my gym in my profile pictures. that ran me about 10 grand total for all the machines and ellipticals. dumbells and cardio machines cost the big penny.
