Amazing how slight variation of grip changes everything!

For my compound shoulder work, I typically do seated dumbell presses with palms facing out/forward, and bring the dumbells together over my head near lockout (impossible to lockout in this position). I can press 75lb dumbells for about 10 reps, which for me is alot.

As part of the new program i've started, I am now doing standing dumbell presses with a neutral grip (palms facing eachother) - with this grip variation, I can now lockout completely at the top of the movement which brings the triceps much more into play. Also, with standing and having to stabalize my own weight plus the dumbells, I find this very challenging and struggled with 55lbs for 10-12 reps!!

Why do you want to lock out, and bring the triceps into play more on a shoulder movement?

I never lock out on any movement except for my tricep lifts.

Same, I only lockout on some tricep exercises and when I do leg extensions, never on anything else really

I've started a new routine which is based more on total body workouts rather than splits. With that, I don't have a shoulder day, arm day, etc. So in locking out at the top of my shoulder movement, i'm also stimulating tri's. I'm also dipping during this particular workout, so tri's are getting a good deal of work IMO.

I never have either, but i'm trying something new. I'm sick of my current routine, it's stale and it was time for a major overhaul. While I was on vacation, I read a book and planned on giving it a go. I need to see if this works well for me. Some people respond well to total body workouts / HFT and some don't. I've ALWAYS done split routines, so i'm testing new waters here.

sounds good man, hopefully you get the results you want!

but on the topic of just slightly changing grips on something I totally agree. For awhile I was doing close grip cable rows with one of the bar attachments that has parallel vertical bars (so it kind of looks like this: l l ) Then last weekend I decided to try a different bar attachment with grips more like this: / \ and holy crap, just like you said, the slightest change in a grip can make a world of difference on something!

Yep, and it's probably a good idea to mix it up and try to hit different angles with those variations.
