It depends on goals. Bodybuilding or powerlifting?
I say three working sets of 8-10 on most exercises is great if you do them as heavy as you can while keeping proper form.
There are certain exercises that differ for me tho. I do 4-5 sets of pull ups 8-10 reps and I do the same for leg press. Squats are three heavy working sets.
A lot of it depends on your conditioning level and what level of intensity you are able to generate in the gym.
I personally do 4 sets of 6 reps. It should be a weight you can do at least 4 of but not more than 6. Once I accomplish all 4 sets of 6 reps I add 5 lbs, and start over.
Powerlifters lift to be strong. Bodybuilders lift to look strong.
With bodybuilding it doesn't matter so much about how much weight is on the bar but more about how that weight worked the muscle. It's about form, control, and putting focus directly on the intended muscle.
I know alot of people say 8-10 but look 10-12 is optimal just make sure your hitting that and or more.
