    Schmeat, the future of meat?

Found this little article interesting and thought would share

The lab-generated "schmeat" is derived from animal cells, so it is actually meat, not a meat substitute. Animal rights and environmentalist groups are excited for this project, because it doesn't involve raising livestock. The scientists behind the project say that the highly-anticipated BBQ has been two years in the making. Each piece of meat is valued at approximately US$338,000. Creating schmeat on a larger scale will be the key to making it more economical, and is dependent on getting adequate funding to develop the technology further.

Would you eat an in vitro burger?

Sorry you feel that people that care about the rights of animals are morons. Who'd have thought people with compassion for a living creature were in fact, morons. And environmental groups are happy because it means less land and less water will have to go into agriculture.

I'm kind of between your two positions.

I'm for eating what I kill, and in that case, nothing wasted, so sleep good at night.

I'm against sport hunting, and then leaving the prey for the vultures.

IF this artificially cultured meat is economical and palatable, then I'd give it a go. but hopefully, I'd hope that it would be more economical that non artificially cultured meat, else where is the incentive for the masses?

I definitely agree here. Unfortunately, I am not a vegan; but the practice of industrial meat production is horrendous. We people like to believe we are the absolute shit, and we are superior to all other living creatures because "we were made in the eyes of God." Animals are there merely for our own benefit. It's ridiculous. It's also hypocritical. The argument that people tend to have is that since we are more advanced and intelligent, we are superior creatures; yet most people don't apply that logic on an intraspecies level, that is Human A is superior to Human B because Human A is smarter.

I am definitely with you there Times. I never understood sport hunting. I think some people feel masculine when they shoot down a big animal when there is nothing "manly" about that. I mean you have big freaking gun. Now if you can kill a lion with your bare hands, then you can have something to brag about. If you are going to eat what you kill, then that is fine (as long as it is not an endangered animal); but some people think it's cool to take down a large animal.

I think intelligent meat consumption, one where animals aren't kept in deplorable conditions, is fine. The reality is though with over 7 billion people on this planet, it is not feasible for everyone to eat meat the same way we glutinous Americans consume meat.

keep in mind i am not suggesting i agree with animal abuse. BUT a lot of the animal rights tree hugging type people go over the top in the other direction saying we should not eat any meat or kill any animal bla bla bla.. that IMO is as stupid as stupid gets and it is what i was referring to specifically..

id also like to note u should put an "IMO" behind ur statement because thats all it is...ur opinion.. and its one i disagree with completely! animals are animals.. they are not even in the same ballpark as we are..

in closing id like to say i have dogs and cats at home and love them dearly and deeply.. i would NEVER consider treating them poorly and dont condone anyone that would..

Agreed. When you have different races that believe they are better than others, then what real chance or respect does the animal kingdom have from us. Humans are the custodians of this planet and we treat the place like it's a fvcking toilet. When man isn't busy doing something abhorant to the environment or an animal, he's doing it to another human being.

There is no way that "Schmeat" will replicate the textures, juices and fats that are in real ribeyes. But I'm all for this stuff being made. It means demand for steak will drop and thus I'll be getting bigger steaks for less.

What purpose do cattle serve? Are you only against using them for meat or do you have a general problem with killing them? If people don't eat beef most farmers won't raise them.

I endorse hunting. However, I am against the way that it is carried out. If you are going to kill something kill it. Don’t shoot it then have to track it down so that it can suffer until you put it out of its misery. I find that cruel. Trapping is necessary to help regulate wildlife population. Again I don’t like the way that individuals trap. The traps they use 90% of the time don’t kill the animal it only holds them there until the trapper arrives so he can beat the animal to death or step on its throat choking it to death. Maybe the animals lucky and it’s by a body of water and it receives the pleasure of being drowned. Most trappers skin the animals and then throw their bodies onto a pile. If you’re going to trap a regulation should be in place that you must use the fur and the meat of the animal. If you’re not going to eat it donate the meat to a food pantry. Every year while growing up I was forced to hunt and trap. I loathed the experience. The only thing that made it bearable was being able to donate to those that had little or nothing.

I don't get it. Does this lab grown meat somehow involve 405's thyroid?

I read an article or saw a documentary on this stuff. I remember people who had tasted it saying they couldn't tell it from chicken except that chicken actually had a taste whereas the lab meat had absolutely no flavor.

Its a bit expensive for us 'commoners' at 300k+ per chunk (sorry I just HAD to use that in a sentence )

If this can be a way to stop the 18 human beings from starving to death every minute in this world than I'm all in. We need to find some way to stop world hunger.

If food was free there would still be world hunger. There are to many governments that use it for control.

We (the US and other countries) send food and supplies many places but 80% never make it where it is supposed to go. Same with helping people in our own countries, most of the help or $$$ never get to where it is supposed to go.

The problem has nothing to do with lack of food, water or resources.

I agree. The American government actually pays farmers to not plant crops, or harvest their crops. When I was younger my father received a check from the government to dump four loads of corn in the middle of a field and leave it for waste.
