I took norvasc before. It didn't really work well on me and really just made me tired. Lisinopril works well on me, but it gave me an itchy throat that the only relief was to force myself to cough constantly. My blood pressure was up at the 170/100 area when they started me on meds.

Currently, I'm on metoprolol and enalapril. It's been getting the job done.

Amlodipine works by slowing the movement of calcium through the muscle cells that are found in the walls of blood vessels. It does this by blocking 'calcium channels' in these muscle cells. Calcium is needed by muscle cells in order for them to contract, so by depriving them of calcium, amlodipine causes the muscle cells to relax.

Seems like it my hinder time in the gym. Or maybe I'm crazy

Meto has worked well for me......what time of the day do you take it?

I take it twice. At 3pm and 3am. Walmart only carries the tartrate for $4. The succinate version of it costs like $50 bucks. To me, I'd rather save the money and take it twice a day.

Same here. Was on 50mg/day for years. But, thanks to lifestyle changes, cialis, and l-arganine, I bite off 1/4 tab now. But, when I was taking more than my body needed, I was a slug with no energy. Maybe your dr. will play with the dose or try something else if you don't feel better soon. Good luck and be pro-active with your doc.

Used to take Metoprolol and Altace, but found that Coreg and Atacand work better for me.

ACE inhibitors and calcium channel blockers usually don't have many sides for me, but I seem to be sensitive to different beta blockers. That was why I was switched from metoprolol/Lopressor to Coreg. Coreg used to be a tad pricey, but a generic is available now and works well for me.

I take it at night, I wonder if thats why I dont feel it so much? I felt my BP was highest after training and if I decide to use a pre-workout again it would help with that. Im only taking while on tren, so hopefully it will go back down when I come off, if not Im going to look into something else.

Im only taking 25mgs ed, maybe thats why I dont feel it so much? I was 150/80 so it wasn't crazy bad but my friend said its unhealthy. Im going to go in tomorrow and get it checked again, see how I am before I take it.

The effects of selective calcium channel blockers are limited to cardiac and smooth muscle. They don't affect skeletal muscle.
I've tried it, but it didn't lower my BP much and it causes pedal edema from the peripheral vasodilation. **** that.

My favorite first line BP med is lisinopril (or Losartan if you're susceptible to the dry cough from ACE inhibitors), followed by HCTZ (a diuretic).
If tachycardia is causing the issue, then Bisoprolol is a good beta blocker to use, as it can be taken once daily and is highly cardioselective (unlike metoprolol, which affects adrenergic receptors throughout the body, causing many more unwanted effects).

Clonidine is very effective, but it can cause drowsiness (as it stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system) and needs to be taken several times daily. It also has the added effects of treating neuro/psych issues like anxiety and boosting GH levels.

That's me. I though I had bronchitis or something because I was caughing for 6 months and had no idea why until I went to the doctor to get checked out and she said Ohh lets switch you to Losartan and see how that goes. The cough was gone in 3 days.

Losartan works well for me but then my blood pressure is normally good to borderline unless I have been up for 24hrs or my wife pissed me off. In other words it's a little high frequently. lol

Catapres/clonidine definitely works..too well sometimes ....and HCTZ alone works wells for me, but add Triameterene (Maxzide) and it got to be too much in the warmer months...no bueno/mas terrible.

I had to smile when I saw you answered this, because I was thinking about commenting on this as well, because it's a really clever question.

As I understand it, amlodipine (and most other dihydropyridine ca antagonists) act primarily on L type calcium channel blockers, which are the most common type of calcium channels in all muscle tissue, including skeletal.

But I have seen empirical studies that say the effect on skeletal muscles is extremely small. I wonder why that is? Do you know?

Also (speaking of side effects of these type of blood pressure meds) don't ca antagonists also inhibit some endocrine cells? I thought that they reduced testosterone levels. Does that effect those on TRT?

The cough is wicked. But for me, the throat on the right side would just itch beyond belief. So the only relief would be a dry cough. I toughed it out for like 6 months because it reduced my blood pressure pretty good.

    http://calcium.ion.ucl.ac.uk/l-type-physiology.html

    Cav1.1 a1 - the "skeletal dihydropyridine receptor"
    vs
    Cav1.2 a1 - the "cardiovascular L-type channel"

Calcium channel blockers only affect the latter receptor.

if less than 55 years old. first line treatment is ACE inhibitor (i.e lisinopril) which is what you had, if not better, CCB (calcium channel blocker) should be ADDED on top (i.e. amlodipine).

metoprolol (betablocker) was once an alternative to ACE inhibitor for under 55 years old. but research has found it increases the risk of diabetes and its effectiveness in achieving good BP control is less optimum compared to ACEi or CCB. Therefore taken out from the guideline.

nonetheless, metoprolol or any betablocker is still recommended if your BP is related to anxiety, as it helps a lot by slowing your heart rate down.

I tried Amlodipine, but it didnt work for me. Dont over-read possible side effects, as they generally dont apply to the greater population who take it. Currently on Atacand, Bystolic & Cialis daily which works pretty good. Stay away from Beta Blockers, as they can really slow the heart rate and exacerbate ED issues...

Don't rely on how you feel. I hope you're regularly checking your BP.
