    resting on cycle

i sometimes take a week off when my shoulder hurts particularly bad or i'm especially busy with a work project

i often feel like i grow more during this off week than i do while training

does anyone do this during a cycle?

I haven't done it intentionally. I did notice when I took a month off mid-cycle that I started making much better progress when I got back on.

I feel you on the shoulder pain brother. Had a lot of pain for over 1 1/2 years in my right shoulder and now it's finally feeling decent.

thats encouraging. i worry that i've done some damage

i was working out in a limited gym once with a dude that suggested power cleans with dumbbells

i was skeptical but tried it anyway

it jacked my right shoulder, now my whole right side is weaker and noticeably smaller, at least noticeable to me

    bicep weaker and smaller too

worry i've torn my rotator cuff

    Nah, you'll be ok.

I tried power cleans once, and I'm set. Seemed like too jerky of a movement, especially with heavy weight.

I mess up my shoulder doing overhead dumbell presses. When I threw the weight up with my knee, I felt the injury, but I continued to finish the set anyway. Then I continued doing overheads and ignored the pain until it got to the point I couldn't do anything with that shoulder.

It sounds like for you the issue might be even worse than mine, cause I don't have any size difference. I would go see a doctor and get a scan to see what's going on with your tendons. May be a partial tear or something.

No. Because training is mental and physical recreation for me.
But i agree, taking a week off is the most anabolic thing u can do.
But i cant, rather cut my thumb :/

Its hard to say i think yes rest is very important to grow obviously its in the big 4 of the growth factors but lets just remember alot of pros spend 4 plus hours a day in the gym with weights and cardio and they didnt turn pro just “resting”

    It boggles my little mind

    Little mind = huge arms.

    I’ll take that trade off

Not sure about bodybuilding per se but...

In powerlifting or other more performance type of weight training sports...

The "secret" reason some can train longer than others is rehab.

Most of us, myself included, don't rehab enough.

We may eat well, take drugs, sleep, and lift all out but...
    We neglect strecthing and massaging.

I enjoy a “de load” period from time to time and my joints always thank me and I feel stronger coming back after an adequate rest.
I often times take 3-5 days off after going hard for several weeks. Essentially I just try and listen to my body and it certainly responds when I do.

Pumps happen in the gym, muscle growth happens at home.

Agree with DD that things like stretching and massaging can make the time off even better when giving adequate self care

    Forgot about the deload...

At my age I deload every 4th week.
Younger guys can get by every 8th to 12th week.

A deload for a powerlifter is something like:
Doing 0-20% less weight for half the reps for a week.

    Damn dude,

It’s like you’re my brother from another mother.

That’s me in a nutshell. Need the spatula to scratch my head or grind on the corner of a wall to scratch my back and if I drop something, I fucking groan or yell at one of my kids to come over and pick it up for me, lol

Lmao I swear man. If i had the extra time and money to do physical therapy it would definitely help lol. These steel beams out here at the plant are wonderful back scratchers and deep tissue massagers hah

Lol, I tell my 3 kids that I had them precisely for this reason, to pick shit up for me.

Of course it doesn't work, so I just let the dog eat whatever I drop.

slightly off the original topic but since stretching was mentioned

i started doing a lot of it past few months, mostly legs, hips and groin

i was getting low back pain for the first time in my life and after some thought suspected ham inflexibility the cause

the pain went away and the shape of my legs changed to

now that i'm on cycle they've responded more than before in other cycles too

i figure by increasing my range of motion i now stimulate more fibers

When you are outside of the gym, how well are you actually resting? More importantly, how good is your sleep?

I feel like potentially you are not getting enough rest in between workouts if when you stop you see progress but this is just deduction without much scientific backing. Just my 2.

Sometimes the opposites of whats supposed to happen actually happens. I've taken a week off and came back stronger than i was before. Also have taken and extra rest day and ate pure garbage (fast food, sugary snacks etc) then came back and had some of the best workouts I've had in years. My mind and body are always giving me different signals. My mind says get in the gym get that hour of cardio and an hour of weights, while my body's saying stretch for 30 minutes, take an ice bath then a hot shower.
Which brings me to another point. Hot/Cold therapy works wonders for recovery and is something I feel is neglected by 90% of active people.

How many sets total? So many variables it’s hard to say. Muscles grow when they’re rested.

AAS enable us to over train but there’s a point of diminishing returns as well. Again, it’s such a hard thing to broad brush. If you’re feeling achy and tired, it’s best just to listen to your body and not over do it.
