An Amputee
--------------

Some things you don't get over --
they're more like an amputation
you learn to live with

And so now in the month of April
I'm prepping you for theatre

But I don't believe in anaesthetic
-- I need you to feel this
as I remove myself from your life

It won't be a shock when I leave
-- I've been on a collision course
for years and years

And although from time to time
there may have been glimmers of hope
-- all that singing and dancing you saw
was how I eloquently circled the drain

My personal experience with amputees immediately reminded me of the pain remaining in the removed phantom limb. It was a lingering thought that affected me and stuck with me as I read the story.

I was confused about the usage of the drain at the end. Was that circling a gradual departure by yourself?

I’m not generally a poetry lover/reader myself, but thought this story was very intriguing. And of course I also appreciate an intelligent and clever usage of darkness to tell a story. Maybe I’m going to have to read some Poe after my next round of books.

I took part in a poetry workshop for a regional initiative to promote the arts. There isn't just one theme, a few people wrote various poems.

When something shit happens in a person's life, they try to take the good from it, they try to find the silver lining, they try to find the beauty in their loss, and they try to move forward with a new purpose.

An amputation leaves you with a deficit. Having two arms is better than having one arm. Having two legs is better than having one leg. You won't be able to come up with some beautiful reason why you're better off with just one hand instead of two.

Dealing with an amputation comes down to stopping analysing your situation, stopping hypothesizing on how it could be better. With an amputation, you just gotta say, it is what it is and I am where I am.

Some things in life you don't bounce back from. You don't get over them, you just learn to live with them. Some people lean on a religious faith -- I met one guy whose 8yr old daughter was kidnapped, raped and murdered, and he survives on his Christian faith, paying regular visits to churches around Ireland to share his testimony.

As I mentioned before on this forum, and as you pointed out was repeated in a Hollywood movie: There are the unpleasantries in life that hurt you, and there are the unpleasantries in life that change you.

That last stanza in my poem is about how a person who's on a collision course with death can seem to be doing really well toward the end, right before they check out. By 'circling the drain', I meant the process of unravelling that takes place as a person approaches their suicide.

I started a thread last year about meeting an older woman working out in the gym with prosthetics on both amputated legs and another on her amputated arm.

I saw in Ukraine, soldiers post pictures of themselves in artistic fashion to make a statement.

Bottom line is you got to have admirable strength.

Really great poem FK and really interesting way to describe an inevitable suicide.

I'm actually glad you touched on this particular matter.

I think I'm probably lying to myself a little about the 'inevitably' of the suicide that took place in my life. Was she on a collision course for years before I met her? Yes she was. And was it probable that she would eventually kill herself? Yes it was. But I don't believe that anyone is an inevitable suicide, not even the guys in psychiatric units who've hacked themselves up a few times.

I do think that some people are so messed up that they need to be physically removed from their situation, get away from their family, get away from their neighbourhood, get away from their community, to go somewhere for residential care -- whether it's to a temple, or a rehab, or a psychiatric unit. I do think that anyone's internal emotion state, their outlook on life and their life circumstances can change in such a way that they desire to live on, irrespective of what's happened in the past.

I've mentioned before that I do a 10-day silent meditation course each year........ there's a good video about it up on YouTube where they ran the meditation course in a prison in Alabama........ definitely worth 72mins of your time:

Not a fan of belittling/minimizing someone’s suffering. Particularly from those f’n animals. Many years back at a previous gym I would see a young man that was severely burnt, his arms were badly scarred and he had only a remnants of a face. I thought - what guts to get out there & at a gym that is all about physical perfection.

But here ya go as I’m in a poetry mood today . . . Dedicated to that kid who I never really met nor knew how to approach to applaud him.

no one would have imagined he'd end up without a face

Cartel done nabbed him on Alabama's windy roads,
customers be complaining they never received their loads

Once transporting containers full of car rentals,
not so frequently anymore since they made a dog eat his genitals

The beat, beat, beat of the heart in his chest
-- life so precious, so why choose a child to molest?

I guess this qualifies since it's summer. Right @ 90°F almost 100°F w/ humidity factored in. It's a little lower humidity today.

I heard this one a couple of years ago. It kind of made sense/stuck with me so I came home and looked it up and printed it out before I forgot too much.
