I fly aerobatic competition with 2 meter RC planes. My wall is covered in trophies. I can tell you that my #1 plane cost me around $3500 without the transmitter, which is a Futaba with synthesized freq converter and it's about $1200 for the Xmitter and reciever. It took me over 6 months to build and another 3 months to flight trim for competition. The engine is a 4 hp prop engine that burns nitro and methanol.
I'd tell you more, but then you'd be able to figure out my RL name and stuff....heh.
Yes. I'm a geek with muscles. And this is the coolest hobby in the world. But when they hit the ground....OUCH it stings the wallet. But that's part of it.

And to answer your question, that engine alone with power start is about $3500. That plane is close to $10000 flying.
And that is just a sport jet.........heh. I've seen scale F4s go for 25k without the radio gear.

Some guy put a turbo jet engine in the back of his truck, bolted it down and managed to turn it on while inside his truck. Needless to say, when they found him, all that was left was a desintigrated jet engine. The truck tires shredded on the street within 50 feet and then the entire truck melted on the road while it slid on its frame 400 miles an hour for a several hundred feet.

Except it was a 73 impala when it first was told (it got the "darwin award" back about 12 years ago).
