I loved this exchange b/c even if it made Cruise look wierd, he doesn't care as long as someone got the message that these ADD drugs are CATEGORY II NARCOTICS. Does anyone here with kids want to put them on narcotics? We do it b'c psychiatrists say we should. Chemical imbalance? Prove it. They can't. They just draw fancy illustrations to put in magazine ads for their drugs.

I get kids off these drugs and turn them into straight A students drug-free, so call Tom werd and bash Scientology, but one day you might be in a horrific car wreck and your ER doc who saves your life may be one of the many kids that are turned into A students w/o drugs by those you bash.

There are a lot of drugs that have similar properties to chemicals we deem as bad. - People abuse them - but this is true for all things.

I know the differences these drugs make in the lives of some, including my self. My proof is in my own life.

The funny thing is I've seen this narcotics help people with ADD. One guy, who was around 30, has had a problem with ADD for his entire life. He said it feels like he has to process everything that goes on around him at once. He's been through all kinds of treatments but these meds actually help him. Just because they are stimulants doesn't mean they don't help...

You really don't know what you are talking about. I've met people with these "bullshit disorders" that had the short term memory of people with extreme brain damage. These same people took adderall or ritalin and they were almost like geniuses with photographic memories compared to how they were before. These drugs ARE NOT CURES. No one is saying that. These drugs are crutches to help otherwise handicapped people function like normal human beings. If you had one of these "bullshit disorders" you would probably be singing a different tune.

Most of the drugs that are out there aren't cures. That doesn't stop anyone from taking them.

I have ADHD and Yes i could live without ritalin - but the quality of life i have would be different. I'm like a kitten with strings - my attention span is that of a young child. Does it make me smarter NO.. but what it does do is allow me to work and achieve my full potential. Rialin helps to kepe me on play rather than fast forward.

Yes I don't know what I'm talking about apart from the fact my son is ADHD and we spent many agonizing hours deciding whether we should let him take ritalin as the doctor reccomended after spending 20minutes "diagnosing" him or if it would be better to treat him using good diet and firm boundaries and a loving home life.

I have dealt with ADHD for my entire life and i have not been on ritalin for all of it BTW.

But id agree with scriptfactory - medication does make lives a lot better - if truly necessary. sometimes job changes or life changes make issues stand out a bit more.

i think that's where the problem lies. Is that for someone who takes these meds and doesn't really require them - it makes them feel like superman , able to do things 10 times as fast etc..

But for someone who actually has ADD/ADHD - these medications give one the ability to function like everyone else.

No worries mate. Sorry to sound off at ya! I've got real problems with Doctors diagnosing people and prescribing drugs as a first option. We were not given other options such as dietry advice and some coping skills for him and us. IMO Doctors want to fill everyone full of pills and get them out of the surgery as quick as possible, like a production line. I also think Doctors try and label people. Just because my son is slightly different to the other kids in his class he is ADHD, I call it being an individual. He is funny and sensitive but does struggle with concentration ect. Some of the kids are great at concentrating but are cold hearted spoilt brats apparently they are "normal". Anyway Im ranting off topic - Yes Tom cruise is a dick.

You're right. They do, BUT they are not caused by a chemical imbalance so taking NARCOTICS that create a chemical imbalance is not a definitive solution.

Of course the meds help. If I wasn't sleeping enough b/c of a circadian arrythmia, I could just do some coke and never be tired. Problem solved!

If I had ED or loss of desire, well, just pop some viagra and ecstasy and I'd be good to go!

There is nothing wrong with being hyper - in my day to day live - where it becomes a problem is at my corporate office, where i need to listen and actually be taken seriously. The office is not my palyground - yes this has been said before..
