Some Amino acids (AA) exist in a relationship were the have non-linear side chains of the same AA. Leu, Iso, Val are the three that do this. When you supplement with BCAA's you give the body a larger percentage of these three AA's. These three are also responsible for the make up of a larger percentage of muscle mass relatively speaking. Is it important to use BCAA's in conjuction with other protein sources I think all the studies indicate yes. I do not believe it is most effective to take these on their own without other AA sources.
The preferred method would be to supplement a protein drink with some BCAA's. But remember most protein drinks already incorporate BCAA's in their shakes.

I know this is an old thread but I had to bump it. Do you get BCAAs at like GNC and what would be the proper dosing? one of my protein shakes has 4g of BCAAs, Is this a lot or not?

GNC is overpriced, buy it in bulk such as nutraplanet or any other place, I usually buy it in the kilo. Typically a serving of whey has 5 grams of BCAA's. I usually consume 25grams of BCAA's while on cycle through protein and bulk powder.
