High Blood Pressure question
Ok so I'm 21 years old and have been on high blood pressure meds since I was 16. I was never fat, and my diet was never really bad. I've had all the tests yada yada yada and the docs could never figure it out. So I cleaned up my diet and started exercising. It helped alot. We lowered my dosage way down. But anyways here's my question, I take Metoprolol 50 mg in the morning and at night. Could this be negatively affecting my progress? I know this medicine controls my bp by lowering my heart rate and decreasing my cardiac output. My average bp is about 128/68 on meds. Is there any other meds I could switch to? Does anyone else wonder the same thing?

Do you do cardio? If yes, explain in detail please.
Also, what is your daily sodium intake like?

I weight train 4 days a week and do 4-5 days of medium intensity cardio for 30-45 mins at a time. I do not salt my foods. I do not eat anything that is processed other than my protein shakes. I am on a very strict diet. Yams, brown rice, and oats for carbs, chicken, tuna, tilapia, and egg whites for my natural sources of protein, and at least 1-2 cups of vegetables a day. And I only drink water and occasionally a cup of coffee.

Water retention makes me have high bp.. I believe there is a bp pill that is half water pill. My doc prescribed it to me was on it only 2 months lost like 20lbs along with the water retention and didn't need to be on after that

I assume there's a good reason your physician put you on a beta-blocker (metoprolol) but there are several other classes of blood pressure medications that don't work by capping your heart rate. People often use diuretics, e.g. water pills, instead. The most commonly used one is probably hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ). Have you ever been prescribed that? This may have the dual benefits of helping with blood pressure and excess water retention.

At your young age and not being at a high body fat I would bet my left nut that your high BP is due to a food intolerance that has remained constant throughout your life. The 2 most probable being wheat or corn. Stop all wheat intake for a month and I bet BP drops, if not stop corn and see what happens. I know your not trying to get off the meds really, but I bet you could. Or maybe I am a loon...

I'm on Benicar/Benicar HCT. I take the HCT (which is with a diuretic) ever third day. I'm exactly like you though. My BP is at 127/70 on a good day. If I'm stressed out or ate really bad it can go to 140/80 or even higher. I've been like this since a young age as well. I only found out I had HBP when I was 18 though. And it was really high. Like 165/90.
I wouldn't worry too much about gains being hindered. I'm natural and out of all my natural friends, I'm the biggest and strongest

Sorry for the late reply but just saw this. One thing I have come across recently that seems to work great and very popular outside of the us is PANSALT, it is rich in the essential minerals Magnesium and Potassium – unlike ... salt that only has Sodium Chloride, the primary cause of high blood pressure.
Obviusly Salt is bad for you or at least Salt in the US. it also causes water retention but Pansalt help lower BP.
Check it out.

Here is the other/similar salt study I was looking for.
Not pushing the brand Solo only one example.
Not all salt is bad for you. Traditional salt is simple sodium chloride. Sea salt contains other minerals, but is still predominantly sodium. SOLO sea salt, is quite different. It has 60 per cent reduced sodium content, plus significantly more potassium and magnesium. In fact there's more potassium (21 per cent) than sodium (16 per cent), plus considerably more magnesium. 17% of the salts in SOLO sea salt are magnesium salts. A double-blind controlled study carried out on a hundred men who had high blood pressure averaging 157.5/90.8 mm Hg gave them either regular salt or SOLO® low sodium sea salt over 24 weeks 11. The result was a significant reduction in blood pressure in those using low sodium salt, with the systolic blood pressure falling by 7.6 mm Hg and the diastolic blood pressure falling by 3.3. SOLO sea salt is therefore a healthy alternative to regular salt and should be positively recommended for those with hypertension.
