    Protein shake vs food?

I was thinking of buying some protein powder and the good stuff isnt cheap I started looking at the labels and I was shocked, most of them had sugar in them, plus 110 - 210 calories for 28 - 32 grams of protein. I started looking up protein content of meat and guess what a lean steak had 200 calories and 28 g of protein. Even better yet a can of chunk lite tuna in water had 110 calories and 42 grams of protein. I can buy a can of tuna for .99 to 1.99 depending on brand.

Im wondering if after workouts there is benefit to drinking a shake or is eating a can of tuna just as good or maybe better? I know it will be cheaper for me.

... and you're lucky if you're actually getting that advertised amount of protein. I got rid of shakes a long time go. They're just meal replacements. If you are on-the-go and have no way of eating, it's fine. But for me, I just eat food.

The problem is that most people over-consume protein because they "think" they need it. A 200 lb guy does not need 300 grams of protein.

Whey protein will work out cheaper than whole foods gram from gram....

And 42g of protein is 168 calories so the tuna numbers must be wrong lol

I think food tastes better than shakes so I guess I will try some tuna with mustard and a chicken breast after a workout.

I didnt know there was a formula for that lol mind sharing it? And also what is absorbed by the body better whey or from food? From what I have read a lot of protein from shakes can go to waste...

    Fat: 1 gram = 9 calories
    Protein: 1 gram = 4 calories
    Carbohydrates: 1 gram = 4 calories

    Good observation baseline.

The bio-availability of whey protein is greater than that of any other food source (that I'm aware of)....

There is nothing wrong with using whey to get some protein..... But don't just only eat whey....

The thing is tho, as austinite said, people overdo protein massively..... And you don't need to use whey at all if you don't want to as protein requirements are not as high as what people believe them to be....

I gave up protein shakes months ago since I eat well enough to not worry about getting the proper nutritional values in my body. If you are in a pinch it is something of convenience instead of eating some crappy fast food then a protein shake will do. Supplements are that they supplement your diet and protein shakes are no substitutes for food especially when they contain a bunch of chemicals and artificial sweetners that can create havoc on your neural system. Also a lot of proteins are containing soy for added taste and studies have shown that high soy consumption can lead to elevated estrogen levels in men. No study is saying that eating a steak is raising your estrogen levels

Forget those protein powders, buy gallons of liquified egg whites.
I workout early am, then have to rush to get ready for work. I don't have time to cook breakfast. My one shake a day consists of unsweetened almond milk, a crapload of egg whites, ground oatmeal, coconut oil, and sometimes natural pb. Yum! Maybe it's better to eat a "real" meal, but I consider this real...just blended.

Most shakes are poor meal replacement options at best. Loaded with fillers and artificial sweeteners you don't really need. Having said that, I make my own protein shakes with egg whites, almond butter, almond milk and occasionally rolled oats if I need something during a workout to reduce my hunger. Otherwise I stick to eating as clean as possible and avoid the junk sold at nutritional/supplement retailers.

I drink 2 or 3 shakes a day or protein bars depending on needs (some of which is soy protein). I also drink soy milk. I have read up on soy protein and thought the estrogen thing was a myth. If you can find the study I would like to see. If it is true I will switch up to something else.

Great. I hope it works out for you. Dollar for dollar, egg whites are a better buy regarding protein. And, I know this is against the nutritional gods, but when my shake is consumed on a workout morning, I pour in some nestle chocolate syrup Not much; just enough to give it that chocolatey goodness.

i use hershey's lol and it aint just a little peanut butter too thats why my shakes are 650 calories...when the sugar free goes on sale i'll use that but it has a lot of cocoa which i also use at times (cocoa)(in addition to the hershey's syrup) chocolate is good for you
