It is oil...from a fish. Just like lard comes from a pig.
It is a good source of Omega 3 fatty acids (EPA and DEA being the important ones), which are important if you don't want to die of heart disease, as they combat arterial inflammation.
Fish oil is also good for your joints and other stuff.

"It's human nature in a 'more is better' society full of a younger generation that expects instant gratification, then complain when they don't get it. The problem will get far worse before it gets better". ~ kelkel
That was a good one. ^^

Only place you can get omega 3s is from fish and then only certain kinds of fish species will have fair quantities of it. Krill also but its more expensive and in the end monetarily the normal fish varieties are better option. Both EPA and DHA are omega 3s from fish and help with inflammation, joints, cardiovascular health, brain health, etc
I use one that contains 500mg DHA and 250mg EPA.

You can also get Omega 3 ALA from walnuts which the body can convert to EPA and then DHA but the conversion is not very effective so supplementation is best.
--------------------------
If you don't want to supplement just eat fish such as salmon, tuna, sardines, and mackerel.
Wild caught is better than farmed, and labeled product of China I would avoid.

You can also get the essential fatty acids (omega 3 and 6) from flax seed oil. The essential fatty acids are alpha linolenic acid (ALA) and linoleic acid (LA).
For example the flax seed oil capsules I got contain per capsule of oil:
ALA (omega-3) - 450mg
LA (omega-6) - 110mg
Oleic acid (omega-9) - 110mg
