    Sam e for depression?

Anyone have any experience with this supplement?, Iv read some glowing reports about it like its a magic bullet for depression but Iv been on it for 3 weeks and think it might just be snake oil.

Sam-e is some expensive sh*t. It works (for some), provided the pills are enteric-coated (ie. dissolve in the intestines) as stomach acid degrades the molecule.

There are some way around to get your endogenous AdoMet (different name, same compound) up, by 1) supplement with l-methionine; 2) fueling remethylation from homocysteine (healthier). The enzymes that perform this operation are called methionine synthases. You got two classes of them. The first is cobalamin (Vit. B12) dependent and the second takes betaine as a cofactor.

So you got your recipe: instead of Sam-E, you could supplement (for cheaper) with methionine, betaine (trimethylglycine) and/or the active form of B12 (methlycobalamin).

Creatine also is able to raise available adomet since endogenous synthesis takes up a lot of methyl groups from it.

Another very effective supplement for depression is P5P, tha activated form of B6.

I have no direct esperience with Same but the ones I mentioned above are effective for me.

Interesting information. Definitely caught my interest especially with an all natural formula.

You ever tried l-tryptophan? Also give P5P a try.

What kind of depression are you experiencing? Do you feel rather melancholic or lethargic? How much do you sleep? It gets bettter or worse through the day?

I have self medicated with nicotine gum meditation education and lots of supplements which you can look up on the first post of my log.
Most supplements I continue to use till today I just no longer use nicotine gum and meditate very seldom. Nicotine gum always given me calm equilibrium of self sense and so I could start going any positive direction required for me to get on the right track. A month or two and was out of depression for good. Hope it helps

Have you tried St. John's Wort? Aside from several drug interactions many people swear by its anti-depressant effects. I was on it for a short while, I felt uplifted, not sure if it was placebo effect. I stopped however because I was slowly losing libido. I would recommend that whatever you do, take each supplement in turn. If you start taking a bunch of stuff it will be hard to deduce which is actually working and which is worth eliminating. -Cheers

It sounds to me like you have the classic symptoms of low testosterone . Get checked, that might be the source of all your problems.

So you are in Ireland? Try to get hold of Manerix (moclobemide). It is an old but effective antidepressant that might require special diet adaptation, but it doesn't negatively impact libido like modern SSRIs.

Damn man, in that case see a doc asap to get you some proper meds. I suggest finding some thing that brings you a little joy, a girlfriend, a pet, a hobby.... dont give up mate, your depression has a solution. I would talk to the doc about starting first with SSRI or SNRI before moving to the stronger MAO inhibitors. -Cheers
