If your doing the a regular deadlift then you should only feel it in your lower back because thats all its working. If you are doing stiff legged deadlifts where your knees dont bend at all then you should feel it in your lower back and your hamstrings. They dont work your lats at all, think about the movement for the exercises for your lats and then think about the movement for a deadlift. I use reverse grip when I deadlift because it doesnt rip up my chins as much then. The movement you described above kind of sounds like bent over rows especially if your trying to target your lats. But anyways the deadlift is where you start with the bar at your waste and you lower it down to the ground then back up again... and when you come back up make your relieve the pressure in your spine by arching back and stretching it out. hope this helps.
