prefer to deadlift without a belt myself. works my back better and develops a better/more stable foundation for my other lifts.
if you have just started to do deadlifts then i would say save the belt for when your deadlifting 3 plates a side. You wanna build your lower back muscles and a belt would hinder that developement.
Years back I was dead lifting without a belt but when you get to the stage where your using extreme amounts of weight as I am now then I highly recommend it unless you want to rip your spine from your back(thats an extreme but it's possible)
