i think that using a belt for anything except max effort singles and the like is counter productive.. you deny your abdominal muscles and back the kind of intrinsic strengthening that comes with doing the motion correctly.

I quit using a belt about a year ago and it hasnt effected my deadlift/squat strength at all. Like you guys are saying, that without a belt you build better core strength.

IMO wearing a belt all the time would weaken your core muscles a lot...but I do see a lot of pros wearing them all the time so I dont know. Ronnie wears one all the time in his new video.

If you want to keep a tiny waist, use a belt when going heavy low reps. If not, then no belt needed. As always, strive for correct form. Really all a belt does is create more hydrostatic pressure in the abdomen to help keep your guts intact. When the pressure leaks out, that's a hyatel hurnia. Spell check on that?

TFG, try doing some hyper extensions and super set with abs first thing before lifting to strengthen your core muscles and get a pump before doing other execises. My dad started doing this after having back complaints while doing standing BB curls. I also had him lean against a support beam or the wall and he said that relieved his back problems.

IM one of the few who deadlift and I realise it is a God sent in making your entire body powerful and big. I tend to do my deadlift once every 2 weeks now since my body responds well besides, too much deads saps your energy for working out the rest of back. Some people claim it works too much of the lower back and I tend to leave deads out of my back training . This gives me more energy to focus on chin ups, t bar, lat pulldowns, bent overs etc. On some days, I do heavy deads and some days, light with high reps at fast pace just to keep things switched up. My typical back routine consists of bent over barbell rows, one arm rows, t bar rows, seated rows, lat pull downs , and chin ups. I am yet to reach weighted chin ups so working veyr hard at that. I throw in dead lift to this routine at the start .

I was taught to do deadlifts from the get go. I was lucky enough to have some of the BB and PL competitors kinda "take me and my friend under their wing" when we first started going to the GOld's where i live. I got a thick back and high traps fairly quick from doin deadlifts. Then i had to quit all lifting because of severed tendons in the hand for about 6 months. When I came back I neglected deadlifts, and wasnt happy with the way everything was comin back together. As soon as I got serious again and incorporated Deads as regular as anything else, EVERYTHING upper body started growing. Deads are awesome for back but do alot of good things for upper body in general, and should be a part of ANY healthy person's regimen
