Thats why you are supposed to have a spotter.
moral of the story: get a power rack if you're gonna train by yourself.

True a spotter is needed when going heavy. But let's put this one in perspective. This guy is not a wimp and probably weighs 275+lbs and 250lb bench is light for him who has much experience. In this case, it was not having a spotter that caused his death but a heart condition, abnormal heart beat which led to difficulty breathing, heart failure. Or maybe not using clamps would've helped. At least you could push half the weight up enough to let the 'bells fall off.
