At the gym yesterday their was a guy doing deadlifts on the smith machine. He said he does them on the SM for better control and the bar starts at about mid shin, that way it's all back.
What do you guys think? Has anyone tried this?
Thanks!

He really means the smith machine lets him CHEAT.
Nothing works better than the real things. I take my shoes off and deadlift barefoot. I didnt get to 585lbs from doing smith pulls
On a side note, Deadlift is a complete body growth exercise, not just "all back". If he wanted to just isolate lower back, do some good-mornings.
i use the smith machine but only cuz i broke my lower back in 2003, its healed now but just 2b on the safe side and since i haven done it since high school which was b4 that wreck, it actually helps u get correct form so call it wat u want
Theres no way that a guided machine can help you correct your form as compared to pulling from the floor. You want form, pull with light weight and focus on form. You want to waste your time, pull from a EZ rack.
ok well u think wat u want, not every1 is the same
IMO There is no way a machine FORCING your body into a set motion is the correct form. To me...it is just asking for injuries. Deadlifts are already difficult enough to do right....Originally Posted by yung-priest
Your right, not everyone is the same. Speaking from a kinesiologic point of view, the pure mechanics of deadlifting off a fixed ranged of motion machine vs pure free range of motion, not to mention complete range of motion, is completely different.
If your perhaps doing powerlifting for competition (which I doubt) then rack pulls can help the second half of the motion, if its your weak point. Enjoy.
That's more or less what I was going to say. Sounds like rack deads. Most people are weak coming off the ground. So, more work there, do platform deads. Although some people will say that's dangerous to you feet if the bar should slip out of your grip.
Yeah, thats why I suggest alternating grip when going heavy with deads. Avoid straps at all costs, inorder to build forearm/grip strength.
I don't see why anyone would use a smith machine for deadlifting...
It's not going to give you a natural full range of motion and IMO a
full range of motion is the key... I don't see much reason for anything
other then deadlifts off the floor unless as stated you do have a weak
area in your lift and want to specialize on that area using a rack...
When i do deads for back...i do em from the floor.
When i do em for hamstrings..i do 'em in the smith machine.
The strict movement allows me to contract and stretch my hams more forcefully...
I think each (deads from the floor..and deads in the smith) have their own purpose within the structure of a comprehensive workout regime.
Just out of curiosity, why not just do barbell Stiff leg deads for hams?Originally Posted by Narkissos
Maybe that's what he was talking about
Now, I'm confused.
He was not doing Stiff leg deads, I asked him. Thats how he does he's deadlifts. He had some nice mass to him. He must weight about 235 -245 lbs.
Do real deads for real results.
Anytime you limit natural movement/progression, you limit growth.
Period.

i use smith machine deadlifts when im at a sticking point in normal deads....smith machine lets u go heavier for ur lower back...but barbell deads are the best by far
my back is still recoverin from fracturin my lower vertbrates so i dont wan2 mess my lower back up again, after i get the feel 4it ill be back doin em str8 from the floor. and if it works 4some people to use the machine then be happy 4them, no need 2critisize
anyone have links to VIDEOs showing the proper form for a deadlift. For the life of me I cannot seem to get the correct form down. Everyone I see at the gym is doing them totally different.
I tried doing searches but only came up with pics and one 3 second video clip.
Also can't seem to find a video taken from the side to see how much the legs are bent vs how the back is angled.
thanks

so correct form according to that site is to "pull the bar up your shins"
I tried that once and ended up scraping 1/4" of skin off after a couple sets..lol
how do you not totally scrape up your shins/knees when doing this properly??
any way to protect the shins?

ive done deads off the floor, on a box, and in a rack. i feel-em more off the box. when i used to pull heavy, my shins got scraped. as far as that dl video, i throw my hips forward before that guy and i look up from the start. just my 2 cents
