    self spot

the only movements i do that i require a spot on is incline bp, flat bp, and over head press. Within a few weeks i am going to start training at 4 am and im assuming that there won't be anyone around at that time to spot me, is there anyway that i can self spot myself on these exercises WITHOUT using the smith machine?

I dont really know of a way unless you switched to db presses then you could just drop them when you couldn't push it anymore, how heavy do the db's go in your gym?

yea i dont think there is a way unless u do what blue said by dropping but that could lead to injury and other problems so i wouldnt take that as a main option.. just ask an employe of the gym or hey you never know- maybe some other ppl will be there..

im switching to a new gym that i havent visited yet, i just know that they're open 24 hours a day which is what i needed
i can't do heavy dumbells anyways, i f'd my shoulder up once i went to 90's on over head press...because of that i can't do flat bench or incline dumbells without swelling...sucks because i prefer heavy dumbells over barbell, but i don't have a choice

i have a feeling the only thing i'm going to be able to do is not clamp the bar and drop the weights if i have to

there's gotta be someone running the gym right? they must have someone running the place then, with prob nothing to do...ask them for a spot.

I've had to do that b4 when I work out early.

well the way i understood it was that the members get a key to come when it is closed, so that probably means that there arent any employees there...i could be wrong though

    a key????hmmm...hopefully you misunderstood..

anyway...do they have a power rack or even a nice squat rack? you can align the bars where they need to "catch" the weight...for bench or whatever just slide the bench in there and your good to go...I use to do that in my garage at home...

well i havent been inside yet, i just emailed them asking their hours

if they don't have a power rack then im definatly not going there, i'll find another place

good suggestion though, i suppose i could align the bars below my chest and above my stomach for flat bench...that way i wouldnt have to roll the bar clear to my hip bones

Use the smith machine. I believe it has the hooks on the side to where you can lock the bar. I use it for squats etc.
You can use it if you bring over a portable flat or incline bench and place it under the bar.

that is my absolute last resort...i'd rather play it safe with free weights and stop a rep early than use the smith machine. i hate that fvcking thing
